J&J Ejaculation Pill, World’s First, Wins Approvals (Update2)
Source: Bloomberg

By Alex Nussbaum
Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Johnson & Johnson won approval in
Sweden and Finland for the first prescription pill to treat
premature ejaculation, three years after U.S. regulators rejected
the drug, the company said.
The drugmaker expects to win clearance for dapoxetine, to be
sold as Priligy, in five more European nations and has applied
for approval in Canada, Australia, Mexico, Turkey and six other
countries, said Greg Panico, a spokesman for New Brunswick, New
Jersey-based J&J, today in a telephone interview. The pill, taken
a few hours before intercourse, should be in European drugstores
by April, he said.
“There’s a globally significant market” for premature
ejaculation treatments, Panico said. He declined to estimate
sales.
Dapoxetine may generate $575 million a year by 2011 for the
company, said Michael Weinstein, a JPMorgan Chase & Co. analyst
in New York, in an Oct. 29 note to clients. It’s one of several
drugs J&J is developing to replace revenue it expects to lose to
generic competition to top-selling medications such as the
antipsychotic Risperdal, he said.

38. Viagra
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 07:28 PM by Johnboi70
My insurance does not cover Viagra. That having been said, ED is a disease and the need for birth control is not. Wellbutrin and HRT are often prescribed to women for loss of libido. Those are more appropriate comparisons than is birth control. My insurance does cover those.

21. Not fair comparisons
AIDS is a relatively new kid on the block, and much progress has been made, so that life expectancy is dramtically longer now than it was when it first came to the West's attention. (I believe an AIDS vaccine was developed that failed in early trals?). Heart disease and diabetes are extremely difficult, multifactorial issues and far far more money inside and outside the pharma industry is thrown at trying to improve the prognoses for people developing these illnesses than has ever been used in developing a treatment for premature ejaculation. Believe me, big pharma would love nothing more than being able to sell a drug which a patient could use to effectively control heart disease as it would be an enormous money spinner, and all the big companies are investing a lot of time into trying to develop such a treatment. 31. So you oppose research to help people who suffer from PE?
Just curious what other medical problems you think scientists should stop working on. Given the amount of medical scientists in the world, don't you think it's possible to work on more than one thing at a time?

And while nobody has ever DIED from premature ejaculation, it is a condition that affects many men. What's wrong with people trying to address this problem? It's not as if there aren't thousands of scientists working on the other problems you mentioned.

57. Yes, it is
Though there are instances in which ED is a medical problem, it's usually psychological. Pills are a cover-up for the real problem, in most (though not all) cases. In other words, Big Pharma is just pushing yet another drug to a lot more people than really need it.

What's next, a drug to cover up frigidity in women? Wait, we'll have to come up with a scientific-sounding name for "frigidity", maybe "arousal dysfunction", or "AD" to sound super-cool. Much like how they turned "impotence" into the MANLY sounding "ED". :eyes:

Between overprescribing Viagra/Cialis/etc, and giving dangerous antipsycotics for mere depression, the drug companies are the worst drug pushers of all.

58. So what should Pfizer have done when Viagra failed it's clinical trial for it's intended purpose?
Should they have just thrown it out even though it proved remarkably successful for the treatment of ED with few side effects, despite the fact that they had spent millions on it? Would they have been fulfilling their fiduciary responsibility to their share holders if they had shelved it even though it would likely be remarkably profitable? I'm sure women who have trouble with frigidity with a partner they love would be happy to see a drug that might let them experience less pain during sex.

70. Nice to see the callous disregard for legitimate medical problems for men
For some people, ED is psychological, but for many others, it is a very legitimate medical issue.

Ah but what the fuck - it's just men, who cares if a man can't maintain an erection, or enjoy intimacy with his partner. Nobody has to have sex, right?

83. You should educate yourself a little bit on how the process works
People like to say that the companies, and scientists, have their priorities in the wrong place because they develop drugs like say Viagra. However Viagra was developed as a drug to treat Hypertension, High Blood Pressure, and Heart Disease....is that something that's ok to develop a drug for? They found out in testing that it had little effect on Angina but instead did....well what it's now famous for.

Is it wrong that they marketed a drug for erectile dysfunction (I hate that term)? Their priority was heart disease, but they found a drug that treated something else.

I'm willing to bet there's a similar story with this drug.

I live in a town that has potentially available women that come in the following classifications:

1. Jailbait

2. 3 teeth and the shape of a pear

3. Insane

4. Alcoholic

5. Married

6. Drug Addicted

7. Any combination of the above

And I ain't lyin' or engaging in hyperbole. This is socio-sexual equivalent of The Gulag Archipelago.

I mean, I consider the mere existence of Viagra and its siblings nothing but a cruel joke.

48. I wonder if they will use the
same marketing line they used for the baby shampoo:

"...and when the two of you are bonding, there's no room for tears..."

62. This thread is the funniest I have read in a long, long time.
There are tons of other pills to get..."UP" that are on the market besides Viagra. Just never take Ginseng on its own, its gives you wild hallucinations and fast heartbeats, and never watch a horror movie after taking it. My husband (then boyfriend) will never ever live that one down!

85. One small step for men, one giant leap for womankind
It will be a very simple drug to prescribe, too...just issue one of those preprinted prescription slips to anyone whose wife drags him into the office by the ear. No fucking guy is going to walk into the doctor and admit he's done in thirty seconds, but his wife sure as hell will.

I just hope these are cheap, so even lower-income wives can finally have orgasms.
