Opinions please: best single-payor advocacy group to donate money to.
I've turned into a single-issue guy on this issue, at least for a while. My insurance company just tried to raise my rate to $800/month.

I'll find an alternative, but when we're talking serious money like that, I think I may channel some money to single-payor advocates.

My question is: who is doing the best job of fighting to make sure that single-payer government healthcare will be a choice available to consumers?

1. I encountered Physicians for a National Health Program out in our community way earlier
than any of the others.

One of their leaders, a local doctor has been organizing with medical school students and he seems to understand that the movement needs a strong and STRIDENT voice. I'm starting to wish he could run against our Blue Dog.

3. I also like the fact that they are trying to emphasize HEALTH, a program for national Health.
That's what we need.

5. Joined PNHP. They have a $40 membership option for non-medical activists.
Their website also seems a good way to keep up on this issue. http://www.pnhp.org/news/

Today's story: "Gerald Shea, Assistant to the President for Governmental affairs of the AFL-CIO, added his support for the single-payer system. 'If you're going to do it the right way, I think that single-payer is the way to go,' Shea said."

6. And they're putting it on the front line!
.. and getting arrested for it.

Groups involved included CNA, Physicians for a National Health Program, Progressive Democrats of America, Gray Panthers, Public Citizen, and Code Pink.

7. Healthcare-NOW!
You'll find them here: http://www.healthcare-now.org/campaigns/ . I agree that PNHP and CNA have been out front with educational actions like strong press releases and their action at the Senate Finance Committee hearing. But these, though essential, are not costly activities and their large membership supports those organizations with their dues. What's just beginning, in response to the recognition that the majority of Democrats in power are not behind single payer anymore than their Republican predecessors were, is street demonstrations and other direct action by the general public. If Healthcare-NOW! gets enough funds they will organize a march on DC this summer. Given 60% of us support single-payer, that would be one heck of a march.

8. I recommend Health Care Now!
They're organizing grassroots participation in nation-wide actions. On May 30th they're organizing a National Day of Action. Go to their website to see if there's a location near you. One of the major things we need to do right now is to show that a huge swath of the people demand single payer. Without this, we're going no where fast on this issue.
