Vitamin D 'key to healthy brain'
Looks like we'd better spend more time in the sun or take vitamin D supplementation.


Scientists have produced more evidence that vitamin D has an important role in keeping the brain in good working order in later life.

A study of over 3,000 European men aged 40-79 found those with high vitamin D levels performed better on memory and information processing tests.

The University of Manchester team believe vitamin D may protect cells or key signalling pathways in the brain.

It follows research published in January which suggested that high levels of vitamin D can help stave off the mental decline that can affect people in old age.

other than that, Vitamin D is popping up as one of the more useful vitamins for a lot of things.

For the technically-minded, this is a little out of date but the NIH tends to be conservative about such things:

4. the Doc has my 82 yr old mother on 50k per week

for 2 months (one 50k pill per week) after that it's 1k / day.

The day after the firs 50k dose her mood, emotional state did a 180 for the better. It was night and day

8. I am on that dosage as well.
My level was the lowest the lab had ever seen tested.. I get tested again in three months after the high supplement, and then the doc will decide what dose to proceed with.

My understanding is that it is hard to achieve too much D.

10. That's my understanding also. I was taking 4000+/day
unintentionally and when I discovered it, I did some research and read that no toxic dose had been discovered at least up to 40,000 IU/day over a prolonged period.

13. I'm not disputing what doctors order, just...
that I know of people megadosing vitamins after they hear of some benefit. The doctor will be monitoring for any side effects (admittedly rare for D in sane dosage) unlike the guy at the Moonbeam Vitamin Store.

14. 2000 IU is not toxic
I take 4000IU daily. Higher doses have been found to be safe.

15. Perhaps, but I'll take the word of the NIH about...
possible toxicity before blindly believing anonymous postings.

As I agreed upthread, prescribed dosages under a doctor's supervision for side effects, particularly when someone is very low on D and has other problems it can help with, are not probematic, and not what I was referring to.

It was simply a notice to people who might consider self-dosing with ridiculous amounts of the stuff, and don't know the difference between D2 and D3.

yes it is very true that we spend more time in early sun rays and eat green veggies to get healthy brain.
