Just one more reason to despise the profession;
Chiropractor claims to travel through time
Ohio investigates provider who offers to reach into past to heal patients

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A chiropractor who claims he can treat anyone by reaching back in time to when an injury occurred has attracted the attention of state regulators.

The Ohio State Chiropractic Board, in a notice of hearing, has accused James Burda of Athens of being "unable to practice chiropractic according to acceptable and prevailing standards of care due to mental illness, specifically, Delusional Disorder, Grandiose Type."

Burda denied that he is mentally ill. He said he possesses a skill he discovered by accident while driving six years ago.

Burda calls his treatment "Bahlaqeem."

I knew a woman who worked for a chiropractor, who among other stories, told me that her employer had patients hold various bottles in front of themselves. The bottles contained potions of vitamins and herbs. When a patient's arms would tingle or wobble, the chiropractor would conclude that the patient's body 'needed' the potion and would sell any and all of these bottles to them. I would imagine that a patient with, say Parkinson's, would go broke going to this quack. Truthfully, I am torn with having the FDA regulate such practices versus going with the saying 'A fool and his money are soon parted,' although I usually end up on the FDA's side.

1. Unbelievable
How fitting. I hope they throw the book at him. I loathe people who take advantage of the sick.

6. No, they're not
and I'd seriously question their ability to provide adequate medical care, especially to women.

That crack about paying preachers less is a good one. If I run into one of those loons, I'm going to use it.

5. Nope, mental illness is devastatingly egalitarian
The chiropractor has been diagnosed as having grandiose delusions. Chances are he can be medicated back into sanity. He might even be a good chiropractor once the mental illness is treated appropriately.

After all, crazy people who are under appropriate treatment and doing well have the papers to prove they're sane. That puts them way ahead of the rest of us.

8. "mental illness is devastatingly egalitarian"
Indeed it is, which is a point I made abundantly clear in my post on MI recently (shameless attention whoring, I know ) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=846409&mesg_id=846409

Yes and no. They have documentation that can verify how they are doing at a given point in time. Conversely, the very fact that they have a documented mental illness and are under treatment (or ever have been) can haunt them even years later regardless of how stable they've been. When it comes to a custody battle, application for gun permit, attempt to get a job or promotion, etc. one's history of mental illness can easily be used against them in a way that physical illness never could.

7. Don't let that be a reflection on chiropractic as a whole*
That man obviously is delusional.

*Which is not to say there are no genuine quacks in chiropractic.
