Bacon or bagels? Higher fat at breakfast may be healthier than you think, says UAB research
http://www.scienceblog.com/cms/bacon-or-bagels-higher-fat-breakfast-may-be-healthier-you-think-says-uab-research.html

"The age-old maxim "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper" may in fact be the best advice to follow to prevent metabolic syndrome, according to a new University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) study.

Metabolic syndrome is characterized by abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, insulin resistance and other cardiovascular disease-risk factors.

The study, published online March 30 in the International Journal of Obesity, examined the influence exerted by the type of foods and specific timing of intake on the development of metabolic syndrome characteristics in mice. The UAB research revealed that mice fed a meal higher in fat after waking had normal metabolic profiles. In contrast, mice that ate a more carbohydrate-rich diet in the morning and consumed a high-fat meal at the end of the day saw increased weight gain, adiposity, glucose intolerance and other markers of the metabolic syndrome.

"Studies have looked at the type and quantity of food intake, but nobody has undertaken the question of whether the timing of what you eat and when you eat it influences body weight, even though we know sleep and altered circadian rhythms influence body weight," said the study's lead author Molly Bray, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology in the UAB School of Public Health.

13. as a competitive athlete
i have found that the fish oil makes a noticeable difference.

the multi is kind of an insurance policy.

i'm a firm believer in eating "real food" e.g. fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, etc. to get nutrients.

10. That would sure explain why the French are so slim .... not.
A tartine with butter or a croissant, with coffee, is the typical breakfast there. You wouldn't find bacon or sausage on their breakfast table. Yet obesity is rare (though getting to be more of a problem, as I understand it, what with kids snacking and eating McDonald's and all).

I, frankly, don't eat breakfast. Coffee is all I can stomach first thing in the morning. And I'm certainly not going to start now. Oh well.

11. Considering that a croissant is about 1/3 butter, I'd say the French probably get their morning fat.

12. I have been on that high fat no carb diet since early February.
Edited on Wed Mar-31-10 08:59 PM by old mark
My blood glucose went down to normal range within a week, and I cut down and soon stopped using insulin completely. Still in normal range, and I have lost a lot of weight.

My cardiologist put me on this diet.

I had been unable to lose any weight even on 1100-1200 calorie diets that included carbs.

I feel much better, eat lots of meat, butter eggs, etc. What was killikg me was bread, rice, beans, all that "Food pyramid" bullshit.
There is NO ONE diet that is healthy for everyone, but this one really works well for me.
