Ozone generators

I am just learning about these for odor, mold, fungus, etc..control.

I need to deodorize cigarette smell from an RV due to allergic reaction.

Anyone have experience with them?
I know they require a closed area, no outside air, and preferably moving cool and dry air.

Do these machines work?

I am seriously considering renting this unit after I get through tearing out the carpet and washing the interior down but want to know if it can get the smell out of the walls.

1. I had some experience with them. I shot down a salesman

attempt to sell these Eagle 5000 air purifiers. They are a combination ozone/ion generator. For what our purpose would have been they were not a good option. Having them running during business hours in our Eagles Lodge wouldn't have worked. Those were also way over priced for what they are.
My research indicated that ozone generators are effective at removing smoke odor though. Lots of info available on the internets.

2. You want to be careful

Personal exposure to ozone is not good. Ozone can break down some chemicals into aldehydes.
If used alot, they can age subsatnces such as rubber gaskets.
Research the scientific literature.

3. Yes I have experience with them.

I think these people know what they are talking about.
I have let friends borrow the big one to deskank their carpets.

I have a large one that is cylindrical that is good for deodorizing stinky places.
Model XT-4000.

I also have a small one that you hook up aquarium hose and a bubbler to, to either ozonate olive oil (to put on wounds) or to bubble through cold water to drink & purify it. Model XT-301.

I think they're pretty good.

This place even sells them that attach to the side of an AC duct to kill the mold.


I have the large cylindrical one on top of a cabinet, just below my air intake duct. I turn it on occasionally to run thru my central AC.

It might be more cost efficient to buy one. Of course O3 is an irritant so you don't want to be around it when you close up the place and turn it on. They all have timers on them. The big ones use UV light to produce O3. It decomposes very quickly, it is unstable.

4. I have an anecdote

Years ago, my cat had a chronic eye infection of some sort that no vet could figure out or treat successfully. Even a specialist, a vet eye doctor. This went on for years (and tons of $$$).

I got an ozone generator and put it in the room where she spent all of her time. (She was already old by this point, probably 15).

After some time I noticed that her eye infection was gone, completely cleared up. She lived for another 6 years and the infection never came back.

Was it the ozone? I don't know, but that was the only thing I could conclude.

I know there are dangers with too much ozone (or any, for that matter, since it produces free oxygen radicals that are damaging).

5. RVs generally aren't insulated with anything that traps smoke

so removing the carpet and scrubbing the laquer off walls and windows should do the trick.

If there is lingering stench in the walls, I doubt the ozone generator will do anything about it. You can try it, of course, because it's a rental and not a purchase item and the outlay won't break you. You could improve your odds by unscrewing panels in the walls and allowing the ozone access to the interior spaces.

Seriously, though, allergens should be gone with the walls and windows washed and all carpet and upholstery replaced.

You have my sympathy, smokers just never realize how bad their stuff stinks even weeks after they've let it go.
