http://www.medpagetoday.com/Pediatrics/Vaccines/21943"The use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine appears to have reduced the incidence of pediatric bacterial pneumonia by 20% in England during the first two years after the vaccine was introduced, investigators reported. Hospital admission rates for empyema also declined by 22%, according to Sonia Saxena, MD, of the Imperial College of London, and colleagues.
The improvement followed a two-year prevaccine period when hospitalization for childhood bacterial pneumonia and empyema increased by 19% and 77%, respectively, they reported in an article published online in the journal Thorax.
"The success of any vaccination program depends on vaccinating as many people as possible," Saxena said in a statement. "Now that we have clear evidence about the benefits of pneumonia vaccine, we hope more parents will be encouraged to have their children vaccinated in the future."
