FDA weighs how to stop abuse of over-the-counter cough and cold drugs
http://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug/31/news/la-heb-robo-tripping-20100831

"The Food and Drug Administration will consider placing restrictions of the sale of over-the-counter cold remedies containing dextromethorphan, such as Robitussin and Coricidin, according to an agency memo.

An advisory committee will meet on Sept. 14 to review data on the misuse of cough-and-cold remedies among children and adolescents -- an activity known as robo-tripping.

1. Annoying.
So, when are they going to regulate Luden's cough drops?

2. There can be some severe risks associated
with this stuff, particularly for kids who don't read labels. Lots of the meds containing dextromethorphan also have a full dose of paracetimol (tylenol) in it. The dextro may be a largely harmless high in the right dosage, but the tylenol will kill you or at least damage your liver if you take too much of it.

I don't think it's unreasonable to move this behind the counter and have to be 18 to buy it.

5. I'm with you there.
Unfortunately, I have patients who do go to it, apparently in desperation.
