Scalia ...I forgot to post this!
By now everyone knows that Scalia CHOSE to go to the Ritz Carlton Federalist meeting instead of going to Roberts swearing in ceremony. Personally, I think he said he was invited and couldn't miss it. NOW< lets be serious. Scalia ia SCOTUS Justice, the Federalist Society would have moved their meeting for him. Second The Ritz carlton would have figured out a way to accommodate the move. What I find unnerving is he is ONE of NINE Justices that determine the fate of over 300 million people......AND he wasn't ABOVE petty jealousy over not being chose to be Chief Justice. Everyone knew he wanted it.
I just found this on the net. I have no idea if it has legs. I had not heard anything about further repercussions over his absence
quote.....
It remains unclear whether Justice Scalia will have to step down from the Supreme Court or face impeachment, as no Justice has ever missed a hearing as critical as a swearing-in ceremony before. Some scholars argue that having missed Roberts' swearing-in ceremony, Scalia lacks the qualifications to vote on cases heard by the Roberts Court. A group of law professors are rumored to be circulating a letter demanding that in light of Scalia's absence from the critical ceremony, Scalia's vote should now be ignored, and the vote of Justice Ginsburg (who was present) should be counted twice. Developing....

8. I can *see* the visual now . . .
.

I can *see* the visual now . . . shaking the constitution, beating it w/ an old rug-beating brush, to squeeze out that which it does not contain: authority to impeach a sitting SCOTUS Justice merely because he had the audacity, the arrogance, the hypocrisy to attend a Federalist Society meeting thereby foregoing the swearing-in ceremony of the next Chief Justice! And, thus cannot participate in future SCOTUS cases? Ah-ha! Farce? Farce, you say? Quick, pass the popcorn! DU is such fun.

2. It's meant sarcastically . . .
http://www.volokh.com/posts/1138115630.shtml

It's a comment on ABC's breathless reporting that Scalia skipped Roberts' swearing-in ceremony.

3. A friken swearing in ceremony takes what, ten, fifteen minutes, tops?
You have the aircraft standing by, and you whip from one venue to another. It happens ALL THE TIME.

It's not uncommon for distinguished guests to arrive late or leave early. We saw the Prezzes do it at Coretta's damn funeral!

Scalia didn't show because he was PISSED OFF--that was HIS job, that Five Deferments Dick PROMISED him in that hunting blind...oh, well, Fat Tony, the Monkey was pissed at Dick and you took the hit!

You can see the NIGHTLINE report here--it's worth watching: http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?

He was there for three days, two nights, played tennis, went flyfishing...and taught a ten hour course. What a load of crap!!!

5. I agree
It wasn't the trip that bothered me but that he snubbed Roberts and the OFFICE of Chief Justice. He has his own plane. The damn Federalist meeting could have been 2 1/2 days not 3. I would expect full disclosure of any honorarium as most have done in the past.I found it in such poor taste that he wouldn't be there.

Is it acceptable for SCOTUS Justices to have a political ideology that is so public or is s/he job to interpret the Constitution?

6. Any chance he's so pissed at being passed over
that he'll turn on Bushco?

Vote with the liberal wing? That would be funny.

9. You should see what Scalia has come up with now
In a Federal Society event in Puerto Rico, Scalia labeled people who weren't originalists idiots and denied that the Constitution is a living document.

10. Which is great...
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 04:25 PM by hydrashok75
...since he abandons his own constructionalism when it suits his myopic political bent. This from the Scalia who thought me growing a plant in my back yard is engaging in interstate commerce? Idiots indeed...
