Instead, Tye Hunter said he was stunned by what he called “vociferous” opposition throughout much of the community.
Judges told him public defenders weren't needed, and a state representative threatened to curtail the power of the state-funded Office of Indigent Defense Services.

State Rep. Melanie Wade Goodwin, a Democrat who represents Richmond County, recently followed through with her threat.
Goodwin lobbied her colleagues to remove a provision that allows the public defender's office to expand into new counties without approval from the General Assembly.
