Am I mistaken? I figured it would be an Independent Counsel, not a SP.

Neither pugs or dems wanted to keep it -- the Ken Starr example didn't endear Dems to it.

I had thought that the closest equivalent today is an independent counsel (?)

Perhaps someone with a clearer memory will chime in.

(Statute and law are often used interchangably-- if statute is incorrect in this instance so be it. I just meant the law that created and dictated the role of a Special Prosecutor.)
