More than 14 months after David Glowczenski died in Southampton Village police custody, his family is still demanding answers — namely, his exact cause of death. Last week, it held a press conference at the Nassau County Court building in Mineola with attorney Frederick Brewington, of Hempstead, and released findings from a second, family-commissioned autopsy.
While both medical examiners acknowledged that Glowczenski, who was mentally ill, underwent physical trauma during an encounter with police, they each came to two different conclusions.
Suffolk County Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. James Wilson, who performed the first autopsy, said the 35-year old man died from “acute exhaustive mania due to schizophrenia,” which were considered “natural” causes. Dr. Lone Thanning, a forensic pathologist in Piermont hired by the family, failed to identify the cause of death but said there was “extensive evidence of excess application of force.” The family believes it was the Taser guns cops used on Glowczenski ... that ultimately ended his life.
Brewington charges requests the family has made to have a second pathologist present for any autopsy conducted by the county were refused. Dr. Thanning was forced to perform his autopsy a day and a half later, said Brewington, adding that it took more than nine months to receive the results of Dr. Wilson’s autopsy. <snip>
