DU lawyers: what do you think of Roberts
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 11:53 AM by imenja
Do you think he is, as Skinner and others on DU believe, a right wing ideologue? Or do you share the NY Times assessment of him as cautious conservative? Or perhaps you have another view? I'm looking for comments from lawyers in particular since you know more about the law and the reputation of lawyers and judges.

Times piece, in case you missed it: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/21/politics/21nominee.html?hp&ex=1122004800&en=3e6d2bbcdacc8242&ei=5094&partner=homepage

1. irrelevant
he's a lawyer's lawyer. Fully qualified to serve on the SCOTUS (or so it appears, absent some sort of melt down). And this is coming from the leftest of lefties. He's not a Bork/Scalia cipher. He's slightly to the right of O'Conner, in my opinion.

2. Company man for the Republican party.
Seems like a decent chap, but a Republican first and jurist second.

4. Savvy about the law; ignorant about life.
Clever and congenial but also smug and lacking compassion. Life has a cruel way of teaching compassion, but sometimes the lesson is learned too late. Scalia and Rehnquist have not yet learned. I believe Rehnquist is being given the opportunity to experience compassion before he dies. We'll see whether he learns his lesson. So will God.
