1. Yes, they are but little treated in US historiography. That is a shame.
I don't know of any books off the top of my head that treat the Exodusters, although I have seen a few articles over the years. I am sure there must be a monograph or two out there. I'll research and let everyone know what titles I find.

4. There are only currently a few available monographs on amazon.
Evidently John Hope Franklin (being a native of Oklahoma) took a special interest in the Exodusters and treats them in his magnus opus.

Here is a lesson plan for 7th graders: http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:9mY3jdi6tLQJ:www.primarysourcelearning.com/teach/l_p/015/lesson.pdf+exoduster&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=30&client=opera

For a detailed search, ask your local librarian to run an OCLC search for you on them, if a simple google and amazon do not suffice.

I know I've seen the movement mentioned in Postbellum A-A history, but only in passing. I know it originated in Nashville, and that is about it.
Wish I could help more, but I do New South...

3. It's sad to see these small communities disappear.
I grew up in a mostly black farming community in Oklahoma. At its peak there was a grocery store, a furniture store, two gas stations, a post office, a bank, several churches, and two schools--one for whites and one for blacks. The schools were integrated in 1967--we had 40 students in 6 grades with 4 teachers.

It was a wonderful community, and while there's still quite a few people out there (many as a result of the encroaching big cities south of there), all the businesses and schools are gone. There may be a church still open, and I know the post office is still there, but that's it.

It's definitely a disappearing way of life.

5. I have been through there.
I knew a little of the history but I was hauling horses from Council Grove (also a very interesting history) so I was not really looking around. Beautiful area though. Very interesting. This will go on my list of places close to visit. I would love to learn more but I doubt there is much more to be found. Maybe I will be surprised.

I also clicked on the Topeka button and was surprised at how nice the section was, there were actually a couple of things I did not know about my home.

Are the Exodusters a big deal elsewhere? I never really knew who and what they were but it is apparently still quite big here, I am always hearing about something they are doing.

Thank you for this. Often we are so caught up in our lives that we forget to love and learn about those that came before us. I really appreciate this.
