As an asdie and for the general benefit of anyone who don't know - The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem was mixed race in the 1930's. The only hard and fast rule at The Savoy to my knowledge was that gentlemen were not allowed to remove their jackets. I heard that straight from Frankie Manning , RIP , and he should know - he danced there then.

It is unfortunate that the expression skinhead was subsequently kidnapped / subverted. It was the original skins here who brought the black and white kids here together through music by adopting ska in the sixties.

2. That was a long time afterwards

and although that's become its common name the expression was not actually in the speech.
