Any of you who have hearing aids, how are they working for you?

I don't need them yet, but hearing loss is all over my mother's side of the family, so I know that's waiting for me down the road.

I have an uncle who has them, but he rarely wears them. I don't know if he's ever really adjusted to them. He said they made a door shutting sound like a firecracker going off.

Also, I wonder if they'd help in a place with background noise--such as a restaurant.

My dad broke down and got some after making us yell at him for years three years ago.

He was resistant having heard horror stories for years.

They've improved the technology in terms of backround noise but his hearing has deteriorated further.

So he just got another pair for well over 5 grand. Not sure of the exact price but they are not covered by most insurance.

As if. . .hearing is a luxury.

The technology will probably improve so put it off as long as you can without driving your loved ones nutz.

2. My FIL has Meniere's disease

He wears a hearing aid, but only in quiet situations. He says that environments like restaurants and malls make it almost impossible to hear speech.

BUT, he refuses to go back to have his hearing aid adjusted to filter out noise. I don't know why.

The filtering on modern hearing aids is amazing and can restore almost normal hearing when adjusted properly (and often).

3. My hearing has been deteriorating

for about the last 5 years. I've got a hearing aid that I use on my bad side. With it, I can hear a pencil hitting the floor in the next room, but still have trouble figuring out what my eight-year-old granddaughter is saying. And when the parrot kicks up a ruckus I have to shut down to preserve my sanity. I'll have to break down eventually and spend the mega-bucks it takes to buy a decent set. I'm waiting until I hit the lottery.
