His name was Dick Tracy

FAMOUS FLATFOOT DICK TRACY COULD TEACH TODAY’S GUMSHOES A THING OR TWO

By Frank Kaiser

When I was a youngster, the first letter I ever wrote that didn't thank a relative for a Christmas/Birthday present (my B'day is two days after Christmas) begged Bulldog Drummond to please move his radio show back to 7:30 p.m.

A schedule change had put him on the air after my bedtime.

Captain Drummond, as you may recall, was a '40s James Bond noir-style detective who fought crime of the era, what there was of it.

We kids listened to them all: Mr. District Attorney, The Shadow, Gang Busters and others now long forgotten. My favorite crime buster was not on radio, however, but in the comics of the Chicago Tribune.

His name was Dick Tracy.

2. I want one of those, too!
LG has a wrist cellphone in development that I saw at CES last month. It reminded everyone of Dick Tracy's two-way wrist TV.

4. I used to live not far from Chester Gould.
I lived in Crystal Lake, IL and his estate was in nearby Woodstock.
An older friend of mine used to play bridge with him and his wife.
He said Gould had tight security at his place.
High chain link fence topped with barbed wire.
Grounds patrolled by guards and dogs.

5. Sparkle Plenty, daughter of B.O. Plenty and
Tess Trueheart and Bonnie Braids...Yes, Dick Tracy was definitely a favourite.
Also Mandrake, the Magician, Steve Roper, Flash Gordon, Rex Morgan, MD, and lots of
others. Can't find decent comics in the newspapers any more. Or is it just me? z
