didn't vote for him because he was Catholic. Not that she was all that religious.

area? We lived in New Mexico for a while and picked up a few pieces there.

5. Care to have a little fun with this? I was in college during the

Kennedy/Nixon debates. We were all in the "smoker" watching this fascinating event. I believe they were the first debates ever televised. JFK was so handsome and Nixon looked like a grouch.

Off to the Coke machine, 15 cents a bottle, 10 cents for the Hershey bar.

Others not watching were waiting for their orders to be delivered from a nearby Deli, Jack and Marion's--best pastrami anywhere.

Others were ironing the collars and cuffs only of their button down oxford cloth shirts-the rest was not visible under the shetland sweaters so why bother.

During all this, our heads were wrapped in bristly curlers, bodies wrapped in a mangy old robes. Boy, those were the days. (I think you can tell, my school was not co-ed then.)

6. Thanks for the memories...

Will throw in double dip ice cream cones for a nickel and afternoon matinees at the better
theaters downtown for fifty cents. Guys were only in the down stairs "receiving" room of the
girls' dorm then. And watched with eagle eyes by the woman in charge. Not allowed to live
off campus (unless with their family) until the senior year either. Remember seeing Stevenson
and Eisenhower on TV but don't remember what the event was. Still have all of my Stevenson
and Eisenhower political pins, etc . (i collect political memorabilia)...Think Nixon always looked
like he had swallowed a sour pickle. z

Yep, my first vote was for JFK. I remember Adlai really well, tho. Laid up from surgery last spring, I read all of the Teddy White's "Making of the President" series, starting with 1960. Talk about going down Memory Lane!

8. How about real Cherry Cokes made by a soda jerk who knew

the proper proportions, not like the stuff in the bottle today. Orangina anyone-or the old Orange Crush with the bits of orange floating in it?

Old boyfriend had a used 57 Chevy BelAire--bought as a used junk for about $50.00. Bet he wishes he had that back now. Turquoise and white, what a color combo.

New copper pennies in the Penny loafers, starch in the crinolines under the poodle skirts.

10. Soda fountains in drug stores

Loved going into them on a hot summer day and getting a cherry coke, or a
root beer float, or a real limeade. Now, those could certainly be classed under the "good old
days" memories. We can still get Orangina here in Trader Joes, i think. But not the old Orange
Crush. So nice to share with folks who remember "back when".....z

13. I loved cherry cokes. And I sure did wear penny loafers and I starched

crinolines under those big skirts. Oh yes, and the pink and black combination!

My mother said she loved the 50s. She was travelling all over; went to Hawaii when there were only 2 hotels on Waikiki Beach! She took me to London, Paris and Amsterdam when I was 16 and going into my junior year. No jets yet, we would fly from New York's Idlewild (today's JFK) Airport to Newfoundland for refueling before the ATlantic crossing to London. Long trip on propellered aircraft, but we had a silver service on the plane. I wore a suit, hat and gloves on the flight!

20. I still have a pair of penny loafers

In fact, I will wear them today.
I had no idea they ever went out of fashion, not that it matters much-I still wear jeans and tee shirts like I did 50 years ago.
Even have a black leather motorcycle jacket, although not with penny loafers....

15. luved those chocolate ice cream sodas

grew up in a college town that had a fantastic soda counter. double cone ice creams for .07 cents,hot fudge sundae for .15 cents.(Allen's drug store on maine st.)(thats a clue)
My first new car was a 57 ford fairlane 500 two tone blue straight stick and overdrive. I put a 3/4 cam and mallory ignition with glass pacs was a sex machine.
I traded it in Texas 18 months later. I got drafted,married and needed air conditioner in vehicle.got a ranch wagon plain jane 1958 drove it for 5 years like an old man. learned "hot rodding" was expensive at an early age.
the drive in restaurant that was the big drawing place at night is still open. its called fat boys and has a reunion every year,people from all over the world come to it. the town also has a military base which along with the college students account for "fat boys" longevity.
best lobster rolls and BLTs in the world!

16. This is great

Orange Crush was my favorite and my grandfather knew so he would put one aside for me.
Yes, the pink and black poodle skirts. We didn't lock our doors back then - how would our neighbor put her homemake cake on the dining room table for us to discover. Records - 45's with the stars! Movies had a story to tell. We didn't have a t.v but, if there was something important to see I could go to the home of my friend. Yes, all tv stations were free to watch as they were getting advertising dollars from the soap companies. Today we pay $100 to watch t.v/get on the web and there is very little to watch on t.v it seems to be all reruns from the 50's - ok with me.

17. I Married a Jerk

My husband, just back from Korea at the time, got a job in his cousin's drugstore as a soda jerk. Yum. Those cherry cokes and creative sundays were great.

Our first votes were for Eisenhower! Neither of us ever voted Republican again.
Although after what we've been through with the rest of the Republicans, Eisenhower probably wasn't so bad. He mostly just played golf. :)

I wore those crinoline underskirts, poodledog skirts, saddle shoes with anklets :), wide belts. I see the babydoll high heels (platforms) are back on the shelves. I had a pair of pink ones back in the day.

18. Ladies, I've got one for you. Remember the little collars you

tucked under the neckline of your sweaters? Dress sheilds for when you got really spruced up. Fur Pom-Poms tied around your neck? Bought my own loafers with money from my first job in the late 50's. Ninety cents an hour as clerk in a retail store.

How about the great cookies at Woolworth's. Chocolate covered Grahams were the best. Tangee lipstick for fifteen cents. Tussy deodorant? My minds eye is now walking the aisles of Woolworth's. The luncheon counter, sandwiches made using a small ice cream scoop to measure out the tuna salad. Surprising how much I remember as opposed to a walk along the aisles of Wal-mart.

Pitch in all...we need a diversion!

19. Memories

Yes, I remember the dress shields and the collars. I wore a hat and white gloves to my first job. After I got married we got a beetle (Volkswagon sedan) which I see has made a comeback. The beetle was a sex symbol in those days. One evening we were sledding and other guys lifted the beetle onto a snow bank!!
