One of these days I'll learn! I woke up this AM to a beeping sound.

Put on the coffee and then started a top to bottom search of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to see which one needed a new battery. I always replace them at Christmas, but figured some batteries die early. Well, 4 smoke detectors and 2 Carbon monoxide detectors later, I replaced all batteries even though all checked out. Something is beeping. Phooey, I'll try again to sit everywhere there is a detector and listen to see if I can find the culprit.

About an hour later, after sitting neal all the units, still could not find the 'beep'.

Annoyed, I sat at the kitchen table for some toast and coffee...beeping from nearby.
My purse is beeping.
Yup! I left the cell phone on and it was a low battery signal. I have never forgotten to turn the phone off so I did not recognize the sound. Between the phone case and the zipped purse, the sound was muffled.

It sure was more simple in the old days. I feel like a dummy.

I'm getting to know it better nowadays....you'd be surprised at how stupid I've been about this thing but I'm learning...

2. I've had stuff like that happen. One time, it was my wife's

Sonicare toothbrush beeping for some reason. It took me half an hour to find what was causing the noise. High-pitched sounds like that are hard to locate, since they bounce off every corner in the house. It's a pain.

Then, the other night, the local news was doing a story on fire prevention. I was in another room. During the story, a fire alarm was set off, which sent me looking for which one in my house was sounding.

3. About 10 years ago I realized almost everything beeps the same.

(Take that any way you want)but searching for something beeping nowadays is not simple nor is it harder when I am 10 years older.

4. Don't beat yerself up.....

...my wife bought me a new phone (cuz she got one like it, too). It's one of those with a slider keyboard for texting, which I do not do. I don't carry glasses on me, and this phone has micro graphics on it, so I can't see a damned thing on it other than the numbers on the dial screen. For the longest I couldn't figure out how to end a call (turn the damned thing off), much less find out how to make one! I hate being such a dork when it come to these new electronics. I liked my old phone cuz I knew how to make calls and answer calls....that's all I need one for. I don't care about taking pictures or videos, but it seems this phone will do both. I don't tweet or chirp or whatever. She just got it for me so she could call me or send me a text. there's only one other person that calls me on it, so it's rarely used. What a waste. I liked life without cell phones. Peace and quiet! I get all the electronic socializing I need right here on DU.

The dreaded glasses issue ! I think all cell phones should be supplied with a huge magnifying glass. :)

8. I'd settle for a bigger font option like my puter....

..or a zoom function. Of course, that would require me to actually learn how to use it, which probably isn't happening! Ha!

6. Yesterday I heard this beeping sound, went searching for the source,

and could not find it. Wife was napping & had closed the bedroom door to keep things quiet for her, so I prowled silently around the house looking for the electronic culprit. It seemed to be in the kitchen somewhere. My hearing, especially for high-pitched sounds, is not good, and my ability to localize sound is even worse because one ear is more deaf than the other. I inspected all the appliances that might have beepers, like the breadmaker and the fancy coffee pot. Nope. Smoke detectors? Nope. I finally decided that the sound seemed to be coming from somewhere near the stove island, which has an exhaust fan above it. I took the cover off the exhaust fan because I couldn't see where else the sound might be coming from. Was there some sort of weird alarm in there? I broke one of the little attachments that held up the cover. It was full of bugs & grease on the inside, so I took it down to clean it. The beeping was still going on.

Finally my wife emerged foggily from the bedroom and wanted to know why the fan cover was off. I told her about the intermittent beeping and had her listen for it. Then she solved the mystery.

She had set the timer on the stove to use as an alarm for her nap. It hadn't woken her because I had closed the bedroom door.

7. My house makes so many noises

one would think it's possessed.

Don't worry, it's not a senior moment - it's a human moment.
Happens to me all the time, and I'm in my 40's.

9. One Friday as my wife and I were ready to leave the house-

There came a sound that was familiar to me but not in our house. It was like a big electric motor connected to a hydrolic pump. It did not last long, just a few seconds and then it would do it again. We looked all over the house and finally I heard it in the middle of a bedroom wall. Opposite that wall was a kitchen cabinet. It was my pager which was supposed to be off but was on vibrate. It was touching the wall which was acting like a resonant chamber.
