Sexual problems linked to cycling
Sexual problems linked to cycling
By Marie Woolf
Published: 30 August 2005

The rise of bicycling this summer had been assumed to be having a solely beneficial effect on health.

But a study has found that, for men, forsaking the car or train for pedal power could have an undesirable effect. Men who cycle are, in medical jargon, more likely to experience erectile dysfunction.

Articles in next month's Journal of Sexual Medicine report a direct link between cycling and erection problems. Studies of cyclists, including bicycling policemen in the US, have found that their erections are not only less frequent, but tend to last for shorter periods.

The elongated shape of bicycle seats could be responsible. Several new studies published in the journal have found evidence that, as a cyclist pedals, blood flow and oxygen to the genital area is cut off.

5. It's the reason I don't ride
That damned seat!

Who was the dumbass who decided that the current bicycle seat is comfortable? It's anything but.

6. I Think This Happened to Me a Few Years Ago
I attributed it to some medication I was taking, but maybe not.

7. I've never had a problem.
Though I've always taken care to make sure that I have a very comfortable seat, which helps take the pressure off and allow blood flow to the needed areas.

8. I had this problem briefly thirty years ago.
I was riding well over 100 miles a day, and I was in splendid physical shape (especially when compared to now.)

Mostly it manifested itself when I was sleeping with someone new and was nervous.

The problem went away for whatever reason.

I still ride my bike whenever I can, trying to regain some semblence of health. I have no sexual problems whatsoever these days.

On balance, I'd say ride, get the exercise.
