Comet shakes conventional wisdom

Comet Tempel 1, which was the target of Nasa's Deep Impact probe, has thrown some conventional theories into question, scientists say.
Deep Impact purposely collided with the comet on 4 July to free a plume of primordial material from its nucleus.

Researchers analysing the data were intrigued to find the comet is mostly made up of loose powder-like particles, laced with carbon.

Some experts say such molecules could have kick-started life on Earth.

The smash-up with Deep Impact's washing-machine sized probe was monitored by another part of the Nasa spacecraft that flew above the comet, along with a European spacecraft called Rosetta and more than 70 ground-based telescopes.

The research is published on Thursday in Science magazine.
