Tiny Tunnels in Mars Rock Hint at Possibility of Life
By Leonard David

A study of a meteorite that fell in Egypt nearly 95 years ago may offer clues as to the search for possible life on Mars.

Researchers studying the meteorite that originated from Mars found a series of microscopic tunnels within the object that mimic the size, shape and distribution to tracks left on Earth rocks by the feeding frenzy of bacteria.

The discovery of the tiny burrows adds intrigue to the search for life beyond Earth. However, no DNA could be extracted from the meteorite, so it's not known if the tunnels are of biological origin. The scientists said the lack of DNA also does not derail the prospect.

Martin Fisk, a professor of marine geology in the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU) in Corvallis, Oregon is lead author of a study team's research findings, published in the February issue of the bimonthly journal, Astrobiology and announced today.

This is a panorama, you need to scroll to the right. Click on the image and it will enlarge. The resolution is incredible. At one point the Rover's tracks are visible and will give you an idea of scale. Not proof of life but other than seeing a 'bush' on the horizon (ohh Nooooo)

discovering life in our solar system, and even outside of our solar system, we are cursed with a government--the Bush junta--that does not have a clue as to the fragility of life and of biological environments, and is HOSTILE to both knowledge AND to life's sustaining systems.

I know that several computer science and statistical university groups have done studies and issued dire warnings about the insecurity and hackability of the new Bushite-controlled electronic voting systems that were put into place in the 2001-2004 period. I wish that the entire scientific community would get together and weigh in on this matter. It is critically important to both social and scientific progress that we have TRANSPARENT, VERIFIABLE elections.

There are now FIVE sources or likely sources of water in our solar system alone--Earth, Mars, Titan, Europa and Enceladus. And numerous planets have been discovered outside our solar system. These two facts improve the odds of life--and intelligent life--elsewhere than Earth, by many orders of magnitude. These are very recent--and truly staggering--developments. But, meanwhile, the polar ice caps are melting and our climate and atmosphere are going nuts due to our own STUPIDITY--not to mention the saber-rattling and warmongering of our government, driving other countries to feel afraid and to push for nuclear weapons defenses, greatly increasing the odds of nuclear accidents and nuclear weapons exchanges, which will kill our planet's atmosphere once and for all. (Read "The Cold and the Dark," by Carl Sagan, about the impacts to our atmosphere of even a limited nuclear exchange.) Also, the World Wildlife Fund gives our planet 50 years--50 years to planet death!--at the current levels of pollution and consumption. The US is responsible for 25% of the damage.

The Bush junta is, of course, ignoring all of the above, and pursuing its own course of greed and war so that a few super-rich people can monopolize earth's last resources--and is doing so quite clearly against the will of the majority of Americans.

The only way that this terrible course can be stopped and reversed, at this point, is election reform--throwing the electronic voting systems out, along with the partisan Bushite vendors who control them with 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code--code so secret that not even our secretaries of state are permitted to review it--and with virtually no audit/recount controls. The Bush junta has cemented its position with this highly NON-TRANSPARENT voting system, controlled by major donors to Bush and to rightwing causes (Diebold and ES&S). They cannot be dislodged. We are in for a rough ride, indeed, if we cannot get rid of these machines.

I hope these amazing scientists who are looking for life elsewhere, are thinking of life here on earth as well, and how best to protect it--and will join the nationwide grass roots effort to either get rid of these electronic voting machines, or convert them to OPEN SOURCE CODE with rock solid security measures.
