creationists on campus
The Jehovah's Witnesses have a booth set up in the Campus Center today. They've got a big poster that says, "Millions of people believe in evolution. Millions believe in creation. What about you?"

I might go talk to them and start off by congratulating them on their propaganda, pointing out how well they've obscured the fact that of the "millions" who believe in creation, almost zero have actually done any research in biology. I wonder how it would go from there.

1. Evolution is not a matter of "belief"
it is a matter of knowledge. One of the first things a decent education should teach is the difference between the two.

12. What is the difference between the two?
I'm just curious: I believe in evolution because it fits a vast body of observable evidence, while creationism does not. But I consider both of them "knowledge". What do these two words mean to you?

2. The Jehovah's Witnesses believe only 144,000 get into heaven?
Only a little flock of 144,000 go to heaven and rule with Christ

I would ask them if millions believe what happens to those who don't get in?

3. "millions believe in creation" ... well, millions of flies eat shit...
...does that mean we should consider adding shit to the food pyramid?

They have a table set-up at our university, too. They put up a big sign advertising "free books and literature" and you have to get closer to see that it is actually only their own propaganda.

5. Millions of people are educated. Millions are not. So the latter
condition, though nothing to be ashamed of, is certainly not a source of PRIDE.

They may as well walk around with "I'm an Idiot" tattooed to their foreheads.

8. Have fun with them
Get a Bible and open it up to Deuteronomy: 18:20-22, which concerns false prophets. Go up to them and ask them if they believe the Bible is the literal word of God. They will say yes. Ask them if they know about elders in their church routinely predicting the end of the world, and it never happening. They may feign ignorance, but look up some stuff on the internet to get your info to present to them. Then read that Bible verses I mentioned, which concern false prophets, which basically says anyone who predicts something that doesn't come true is a false prophet (der-hay). Ask them which they're going to follow now - the inerrant word of God or their church.

Step back and enjoy the smell of sizzling synapses.

9. they ran away!
When I went back for lunch, they had disappeared. I've got two theories for their departure, and I'm not sure which is more likely...

*They and the other 143,997 got raptured.
*The superior critical thinking skills of UMass undergrads overwhelmed them.

11. Just fight fire with fire
Walk up to them and say something like:

Hundreds of millions believe in Islam (or Catholicism, Hinduism, etc.) - How about you?

13. These people are nuts.
“I wonder how it would go from there.”

I’ve been there a few times. Usually, their first response is to pile loads of nonsense on you and ask you to explain all of it (typically consisting of misinformation, lies, and general misunderstandings of science and history) - and if you can’t, they take that as evidence that their God exists.

I tend to avoid discussions with these types seeing as though they have a nonsensical/ deluded talking point available for almost any situation. Some of it’s quite subtle and requires some research to debunk - and even when you do, they just ignore what you’ve just said and move on to another point.

For a good look at just how crazy these people are, check out a site called “the creation evidence museum,” with Dr. Carl Baugh. Here’s some of the jewels I’ve uncovered there:

All material taken from the Creation Evidence Museum: check it out!

Q: What is the Biblical age of the earth?
A: The biblical age of the Earth (using Scripture itself as a guide) is 6,000 years !!

Q: Are dinosaurs found in the Bible?
A: Yes

Q: Did man and dinosaur live at the same time?
Answer: The Bible and the evidence say yes!

Q: Is there any evidence of Pterodactyls living today?
Answer: A growing amount of evidence is suggestive of the fact that flying reptiles have been known to be contemporaneous with humans before and since the Genesis Flood (~4,300-4,400 years ago).
The Creation Evidence Museum has sponsored expeditions to Papua New Guinea which have resulted in eyewitness night sightings of bioluminescent pterosaurs (see Isa.14:29 & 30:6), the most recent being in August 1994 and 1996.

Q: What is the biblical, chronological age of the earth?
Answer: …the biblical age of the Earth (using Scripture itself as a guide) is 6,000 years !! Mankind did not evolve 4 million years ago on an Earth which is 4.5 billion years old in a universe which was "big-banged" into existence 18-20 billion years in the distant past. Jesus Christ, the Creator Incarnate, said He made mankind male and female in the beginning (Mark 10:6), and that when the heavens and the earth were commanded into being (Gen.1:1), they "stood up together" (Isa. 48:13) not billions of years apart !!
