1. "Formerly"?

You mean they aren't still in the stomach?

2. Yeah. No more 20 shots in the stomach. Usually 5-7 shots in the upper arm or butt.
I don't know why it used to be in the stomach.

3. My understanding of it was that the abdomen was the only
area with sufficient area to administer so many (20+) injections in a short time period. But I don't know for sure. My older brother was bitten by a rabid squirrel on the White House lawn in 1951 (Truman and rabid squirrels . . . hmm). He had to have the shots in the abdomen.

6. Squirrels with rabies is very uncommon...has your brother's luck changed?
Or is he leading one of those "why always me?" sorts of existance?

7. Nope - he got past that incident a long time ago.
Is it rare in squirrels? What I wrote is the sum total of what I (think I) know about rabies - thank you for the information.

I'll have to tell him - he'll be impressed that not only is he the only one in the family who has ever been exposed to rabies, but also that he was exposed by a critter that is rarely infected!

8. it is
I was accidentally bitten by a squirrel as I was hand feeding him. I also found out rabies and squirrels is very rare.

Funny thing is, about two weeks after being bitten, I started getting a sore throat!

But since it's been something like 8-9 years, I'd guess it's fair to say the squirrel wasn't rabid.

9. It sounds like you may be infected with squirrel throat, which is always fatal and takes
9.5 years to kill you.

10. Why do you have to be such a jerk about it?

The correct prognosis is 9.75 years.

4. Historical Treatment of Rabies...
Historically, Duck embryo vaccine (DEV) was injected into the abdominal fat on each 14 successive days or more, if needed. The injections were painful due to the sensitivity of abdominal muscles. The abdomen was chosen because of the ability to expose the body to the virus for a longer period--the virus is absorbed slowly from among the fat cells in the abdomen..

Today, vaccines are developed from human cell lines and are far more safe. Post exposure treatment includes not only the vaccine but high dose immune (antibody containing) globulin. A total of five injections given in the arm with the first dose administered as soon as possible after exposure. Additional doses should be administered on days 3, 7, 14, (NOT the buttocks).
