2. flipping genes on and off

can be mapped to a cellular automata model like Conway's Game of Life pretty easily. So it's no surprise there is a strong resemblance in terms of the output forms.

3. Ok. Would be nice is the user could play with the crossover/mutation/etc. parameters.

EDIT: OTOH, I haven't read the book, so I don't really know what the purpose of the program is.

4. oh, totally agree
I think that Dawkins just wanted to show that a few simple rules could create some surprisingly complex structures

(cue Stephen Wolfram to come in and claim credit for the whole idea himself...)
