More Rivers Spotted on Mars
More Rivers Spotted on Mars
By Larry O'Hanlon, Discovery News

June 10, 2005 — Long-dead rivers have just had a population explosion in the dry valleys of Mars, according to a scientist at the Smithsonian Institution.

New data from orbiting Mars cameras have picked up evidence of 21 more rivers with flows once comparable to similar-sized rivers on Earth today. That makes 28 rivers, total, that may have once flowed on Mars.

Whether these were carved by single deluges, a few pulsed floods or a relatively brief rainy climate some 3.7 billion years ago remains a mystery....cont'd

2. Just in case there is some super Martian civilization
surviving beneath the surface, we should bomb them in order to save them. Then we can negotiate for oil rights.

3. I wasn't thinking commie I was thinking
Red State v. Blue State or in this case Red planet v. Blue Planet.

Good idea, they get Mars we get Earth. Fair trade in my book. Mars already has everything a red stater could want. No Liberals, no ecologists and a desperate need for global warming.

Rapture the neocins to Mars, that's the ticket!

7. I believe several theories exist
Most likely the atmosphere thinned out (weak gravity and lack of volcanism, although the exact mechanism isn't clear) causing most of the water to vaporize and get lost into space. One hoped for result is that not all the water was lost but was frozen as the atmosphere cooled and may now be trapped below the surface.

10. Nope, not Mars but Venus
Can't remember the details, but there's been speculation that Venus, with its temperatures in the 700 to 800F range, and sulphorous atmosphere, might be the result of a runaway greenhouse effect.

13. this is why fundies hate science
where there was water, there may have been life, and if there was life, they have to revise their beliefs again.
