Magnetic Portals Connect Earth to the Sun
Oct. 30, 2008: During the time it takes you to read this article, something will happen high overhead that until recently many scientists didn't believe in. A magnetic portal will open, linking Earth to the sun 93 million miles away. Tons of high-energy particles may flow through the opening before it closes again, around the time you reach the end of the page.

"It's called a flux transfer event or 'FTE,'" says space physicist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "Ten years ago I was pretty sure they didn't exist, but now the evidence is incontrovertible."

Indeed, today Sibeck is telling an international assembly of space physicists at the 2008 Plasma Workshop in Huntsville, Alabama, that FTEs are not just common, but possibly twice as common as anyone had ever imagined.

Right: An artist's concept of Earth's magnetic field connecting to the sun's--a.k.a. a "flux transfer event"--with a spacecraft on hand to measure particles and fields.

(snip)

There are many unanswered questions: Why do the portals form every 8 minutes? How do magnetic fields inside the cylinder twist and coil? "We're doing some heavy thinking about this at the Workshop," says Sibeck.

Meanwhile, high above your head, a new portal is opening, connecting your planet to the sun.

2. That's not science. Its speculation.

Thanks for observing the difference. Portals? Do the star seed transmissions come through them? A phenomenon is being studied. That is all. Two rotating bodies, each with a magnetic field, are bound to have their magnetic fields interact. Calling this interaction a "portal" is specious. It is a field interactions.

I note that the woo sites have grabbed this story, which dates back to 2008, and are touting it as some sort of weird interaction. It's not that at all. It's simply interaction between the magnetic fields of two objects in space. It's being studied. It's been going on for a very, very long time. We just weren't able to observe or measure it until recently.

It's a phenomenon that is being studied.

6. Rude? I'm just pointing out the facts.
NASA is a good source. I consult it often.

9. No, I'm not a geologist. Where did you get that idea?
You are incorrect about that. It appears to me that you are incorrect in your other assessments of me as well. In fact I'm quite certain of it.

I commented on the article, not on you. I have no idea who you are. You obviously have no idea who I am.

The subject of this thread is not me and it is not you. It is what is in the article. That is what I'm commenting on. The article itself is actually pretty interesting. My objection is to the use of the word "portal." That word is often used by the woo community to indicate things that have nothing to do with this phenomenon. There is no "portal." There is an interaction between the magnetic fields of two rotating bodies in space. It's pure physics, and it will be understood from the perspective of physics. "Portals," indeed.

11. Well then
Take it up with NASA, I did not write the article.

4. 8 minutes for anything traveling
at the speed of light to get from the sun to here, so obviously that has something to do with why it's every 8 minutes, yes?

7. Actually, the Great Goombah is doing it. He keeps trying to
sleep, so he hits the Snooze, but the alarm goes off after eight minutes, and he has to hit it again. Repeat as necessary.

Of course, you're correct about the time for light and other EM phenomena to travel between the Sun and Earth.
