GOP/McSame/Palin officially takes harder stance on abortion rights as part of platform
The Republican Party adopted its platform during its convention this week that calls for a ban on abortion, the AP reported Sept. 2. The ban has no exceptions for rape or incest or to protect the life of the woman.

The platform takes a harder stance on abortion rights than presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona has in the past. McCain opposes abortion but has favored the exceptions. His running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin opposes abortion in all circumstances.

During the Democratic convention, the party adopted a platform that supported reproductive rights and emphasized prevention efforts. Campaign manager David Plouffe said Sen. Barack Obama's campaign would step up efforts to appeal to pro-choice voters and women, the Wall Street Journal reported Sept. 4. "I think a lot of voters don't have a full appreciation of Sen. McCain's position on this," Plouffe said.

2. It is often said that anti-abortionists want to control women
I agree.

But there is something else we are missing. It is also about controlling poor people. If abortion is outlawed in some or all of the 50 states, the affluent woman who experiences an unwanted pregnancy--whatever the reason--has the resources to hop a plane to a "free" state or country where she can have the procedure done legally and safely. I sometimes think that is why many pro-choice, affluent Republican women still vote GOP: they believe there is little personal cost to them if abortion is criminalized.

Poor women, of course, will not have this opportunity and being forced to have a baby they cannot afford will only drive them and their children further into a cycle of poverty.

5. 'cycle of poverty' - I've heard the theory that these poor children are cannon fodder..

...and that Republicans want poor women to be forced to have them - so that the only way they can "succeed" is by accepting the benefits of going into the military - one of which is some money towards college.

Forcing women to have babies - particularly the poor, is one way to assure that we always have someone to fight the wars we wage.

3. OK Plouffe, then why don't you put it up as an ad, and start hitting this issue?
The ad would go something like this:

The republican platform believes ban abortion in all cases, including rape, incest, and the life of the Mother

Does that represent a party that respects women?
