Southern Baptist Convention on women working
Dr. Richard Land, President, Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Southern Baptist Convention was one of Tim Russert's guests on Meet The Press 11/28. He was asked about how his church felt about wives working. His response was that if the husband thought it was appropriate, then a woman could work outside the home.:nuke:

I didn't see this posted anywhere at DU in the MTP discussion threads and it's been bugging me ever since. So, I just thought to post it. What struck me is how blatant he was. Nothing like having five men discussing this and have no one present challenge it in any significant way. He was literally off the hook.

Here's his mug shot. He's been on tv a lot lately.

1. I was raised Southern Baptist
I'll never forget going to a mother-daughter dinner with my mom as a teenager...How can you tell if the outfit is too racy? Put it on...if it turns our husband on, then you shouldn't wear it in public. Sorry, but at the beginning of my marriage, I could have worn a potato sack and gotten the same results as if I was wearing something sexy. The whole thing was "Do what your husband says" garbage. Bite me. I have supported a family of four for three years while my husband loafed on the couch. I don't have to do what he says. Yes, he has a job now.

3. These guys take certain scripture out of context
to fit their bigoted views. These are the same people that think slavery is okay under certain circumstances. Don't worry about these nuts.

4. "Don't worry about these nuts"
Well, two problems here. First, the Southern Baptist Conference is pretty large Second, I'm just now reading The Handmaid's Tale.

Hard not to get my teeth on edge! :)

15. Yep, These nuts are gaining more power
Shit, James Dobson is out there declaring he'll put a bullseye on any any Democratic Senator in a Red State who doesn't vote the way he thinks they should.

These people are scary, and getting deeper and deeper into politics I am afraid.

5. Given who is in power, I don't think we can afford to ignore these nuts
Especially now that they seem to be getting so much TV time recently.

7. Your profile notes that you are a male
I always find it so comforting when men tell me not to worry my pretty little head about these folks. I suppose I should just listen to the men and let them determine what I'm allowed to do and not do. It's so much easier to behave appropriately that way. /sarcasm

Wonder if your position would change were it directed at you?

And just to prove I'm not one of the "male hating femi-nazis" - I do so love it when other guys tell them to get a grip. (Thanks Peter!)

9. It wasn't a sexist remark. All I meant was these people are
looking to get a rise out of you. I for one don't give them the satisfaction. My advice would have been the same if you were a man or woman. I don't look a posters profile before I reply because the sex of the poster doen't matter to me.

2. What if the husband is failing to support the family but doesn't want the
wife to have a job? What then, Mr. Land?

6. Interesting that you brought this up
Land was on Hardball over a week ago discussing gay marriage. Matthews had the last word right at the end of the show when he told Land that the way to strengthen marriage was not to worry about gay marriage but to make sure that husbands had a good enough job that could support the family. Land didn't have time to reply but his mouth was gaping open as the segment ended.

Not exactly an answer to your point. But you jogged my memory since it was the same guy. He's been making the rounds of talk shows lately.

10. Matthews is falling into Land's trap- he's assuming the
marriage relys on the actions/condition of the male.

The way to strengthen marriage is by empowering both parties so that men are sure women didn't feel thay 'had' to get married for whatever reason (money, protection, "it's just what you do") and are instead entering, with full committment, a loving covenant with another. And being so empowered, are able to fully participate in the human experience without being 'trumped' when conflict arises.

And if the covenant is between two people who are of the same gender, too damn bad. What gives these fuckers the right to define family for everyone?

8. My husband is perfectly thrilled with the fact that I pay the bills
and his money he considers "extra"...like there's any extra...but anyway, he has the mind of a teenager.

11. What? We women are supposed to be on welfare or something?
Cripes. :eyes:

Hey, "Dr. Land" when I win the lottery, then I'll stop working. :eyes: And feel free to ask any man around me what they think of that, I would be beyond caring. :)

Seriously, what a schmuck. :(

12. Yep. But it's only welfare if there isn't a husband present to
support the little missy. If there is, it's NORMAL. Otherwise, staying home to care for your children is A SHAMEFUL WASTE OF TAXPAYER'S MONEY.

I was so disgusted last week when I saw this ridiculous bumpersticker which read "Don't Breed 'Em If You Can't Feed 'Em" next to an anti-abortion sticker. These people want to be the sex police.

13. I learned that Dr. Land's wife has worked since the kids were ..
in Kindergarten, or the youngest was, or whatever.

BTW, isn't it comforting to know that Land is Bush's 'spiritual advisor?'
