I don't know what got to me the most: Maude's incredulousness that she had a choice whether to carry a baby to term or have a LEGAL abortion withtout the risk of injury or stigma -- or Maude's incredulousness that she could be a mother at age 47, like she only had five good years left on her.
The latter seemed provocative to me in light of the New York Magazine Cover this week:
The former reminded me how we've been inured to the idea that abortion is legal but on a practical basis, the availability of it is dwindling. Pretty soon you'll have to travel three or four states away, endure a waiting period, listen to the heartbeat of the fetus, look at sonogram, sing a lullabye to the same fetus before you can have a procedure.
