Texas Governor to sign abortion and marriage bills in church .
This is too much, even for Texas...

*****
Perry taking politics through church doors

By Bud Kennedy
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

The governor is coming here Sunday for church.
*****
I hope all Texans will feel welcome Sunday at Calvary Cathedral.

Gov. Rick Perry is going to the church to sign bills restricting abortion and setting a vote on a definition-of-marriage constitutional amendment.
*****

"Most Texans get it," he said, belittling the question. "The two issues talk about values. A church is an appropriate place to come together and celebrate a victory for the values of the people of Texas."

Thanks to PDittie for the heads up.

1. How can he restrict abortion?
I thought if it was permitted on the federal level states couldn't screw with it.

5. The legislation compels a minor to get
her parents' written consent to choose not to give birth.

I expect it will be challenged up the line (but I can't see the TSC or for that matter the USSC overturning it).

2. Some Texans are just plain nuts. Is there something in the water?
Signing those bills in a church is a slap in the face to the Constitution.

Is that guy really an American?

6. I cannot believe you were the only one to
notice this...I have no faith in a news corps that either does not find this or does and ignores it.

Do you want me to post it in GLBT as well ?

8. Perry is worried about KBH and so is playing to his base
Kay Bailey is rumored to have made the decision to run against Perry in the primaries. Perry's base is the religious right and this stunt plays to that base.

It will be interesting to see how nasty a primary fight there may be between Perry and Kay Bailey.

"... of the temple, and I wonder how long it will be before people of faith get fed up with opportunistic political campaigning in their houses of worship," said Kathy Miller, president of the Texas Freedom Network, whose mission is to counter what it calls the "radical right" in Texas.

They are saying now that the Governor is not signing the bills at a school, but at a "Christian academy". Of course, the school is next door to the church, and the pastor of the church is attending.

Here's a link to the church:

(Televangelist Rod Parsley is preaching there this Sunday. Parsley is the man who told his followers right before the November election that if they voted for John Kerry, they were going to hell.)

edit: Yeah, but who IS Rod Parsley, you ask? Here he is:

10. Oh wonderful. He's a real nazi-for-christ, isn't he?
It appears he founded the "center for Moral Clarity" for the sole purpose of pushing the reichwing political agenda without endangering the tax exempt status of his church.

Here is his Mission Statement:

"The mission of the Center for Moral Clarity is to be a Christ-centered voice and a force in our nation to help raise the standard of moral excellence and protect the values central to our faith. We believe righteousness can be exalted in our nation through prayer, information and activism. CMC will provide the necessary tools needed to effectively equip others to impact society."

Here are some excerpts from his book, "SILENT NO MORE" :

On homosexuality:

"Homosexuals are anything but happy and carefree. In fact, indications are that they are a very sad lot indeed. According to virtually every scientific, medical, and sociological study of the homosexual community, the everyday world of the American homosexual is a very unhappy world."

"...a study published in a recent issue of the prestigious American Journal of Public Health found that more than 21 percent of all gays had made suicide plans at one time or another, and 12 percent had actually made attempts on their own lives at least once . . .
The pressure on society to accept the audacious behaviors and disastrous consequences of homosexual activity is not a matter of cultural drift or shifting mores. It is a carefully orchestrated, highly organized, and extremely disciplined political program."

On Islam:

"America has historically understood herself as a bastion
against Islam in the world. Now, America is engaged in conflict with Muslims at home and on the far-flung battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq. Clearly, history is crashing in upon us. Yet what makes this conflict with Islam so desperate is that Islam is not just another belief system at odds with Christianity. It is not just a set of superstitions or practices that people do in the privacy of their own homes that never bother anyone else. Islam is, instead, a faith that fully intends to conquer the world. It cannot be ignored. It must be answered.”

"In fact, I will tell you this: I do not believe our country can truly
fulfill its divine purpose until we understand our historical conflict with Islam."

On poverty:

"...that instead of enabling the infirm and the elderly to lead full and productive lives, and instead of empowering the poor to control their lives and rise from poverty, social welfare programs have more often than not rendered them impotent, dependent, and helpless.”

It's obvious why the Governor chose this guy.

11. What a scum sucker. Soon he'll have normal Americans
protesting outside this and other churches. This type of political behavior is already causing a serious backlash against religion.
