Iran police beat women activists
Police in Iran have beaten a small group of women activists trying to hold a protest for greater legal rights in the biggest square of the capital.

They were calling for equal divorce and custody rights and a ban on polygamy.

The viciousness of the police attack caused men who were passing by in the street to protest, our correspondent says.

"These are our sisters, how can you do this?" passers-by shouted at police.

There's much more. What isn't remarkable is the official overreaction. What is remarkable is the reaction of passersby to it.

Iran is a complicated country and very misunderstood by the west. If Stupid had not spent the last two years waving his dick at them, they'd likely have moderated considerably.

3. so,here in the USA out west our cops tear gassed women
and children at a peaceful anti war protest. I watched the video. Cops claimed someone threw a bottle at them.
Ha!! When the videotape was reviewed there was no bottle throwing incident only belligerent cops with an agenda. Disperse those angry Americans anyway you can.
Iran is not our business. If Iranians don't like it let them take over their country. Meanwhile we have a war to fight here at home. Take back America from those M-U-R-D-E-R-I-N-G F-U-C-K-I-N-G T-H-I-E-V-E-S who currently occupy OUR whitehouse.

I saw that videotape here at DU, don't know if I could find it..

4. Unfortunately, I knew that would happen.
They should feel proud of themselves, what was surprising was the reaction of the men walking by, hopefully they will support the women in the future.

5. These women are heroine's!!!

An Iranian female police officer, left, beats a female protester, during a protest in Tehran, Iran, Monday, June 12, 2006. Iranian police beat women at an equal rights demonstration in Tehran Monday, injuring at least one protester and arresting 20 others. The protest was organized by a previously unknown group calling itself the Labor and Communist Party. An invitation delivered to The Associated Press a day before the rally demanded equal rights for women and the nullification of a polygamy law that allows Iranian men to have four wives at the same time. "We are women, we are human, but we don't have any rights!" protesters chanted.

Some 100 police, including female officers, attacked the demonstrators and dispersed them about an hour after the protest began.

Throughout most of the confrontation, female officers beat female protesters and male police beat male protesters there to support the women. Male police generally are not permitted to touch female suspects.

"I don't care about the police charging us with batons," said Laila, 21, who would not give her last name. "I would attend any pro-human rights demonstration in the future," she said.
