Rev. Jessie Jackson and Rep. Maxine Waters.

Caller on radio said that many of the other derogatory words for African Americans "speak of ownership." Interesting.

What do derogatory terms for women "speak of"?

3. yeah, and right behind the c-word, let's get rid of "dickhead"

in fact, why don't we just create a new cabinet position and agency dedicated to measuring the proper length of a hemline.

I know the heart's in the right place, but what a waste of air. You can't erase derogatory. Take away one word and it will promptly be substituted with another word, and mockingly done.

In the old gummint job I used to work a brazillian years ago, this speech was given, as it is every 2 years or so by whoever feels their star needs some camera time, and the black people I worked with promptly started referring to each other as "BP's". Of course one day when I innocently asked what that stood for, Miss K informed me that it stood for British Petroleum, black as Texas tea, etc. ;)

It was all silly, both the attempt and the circumvention of it. Conscientious people won't say it or even think it and the rest won't pay attention long enough to make a difference.

14. that would be a clear yes and no
;)

We were, shall we say, a very "closely knit" little family of coworkers. It was the eighties. There are some scandalous prime time soaps that are positively GRANNY compared to that workplace. They probably wrote most of that workplace legislation about us, to protect the easily shocked and scandalized.

15. Mine reads "I am not A bitch, I am THE bitch. and to YOU, I am MS BITCH"
just about all the words used to denigrate women were originally titles of the goddess, including the "c" word. We must reclaim them proudly, so that they no longer have the power to wound us.

last time an individual called me a c***, I clapped my hand over my heart and gushed, "you called me a "c***" that's one of the titles of the goddess. nobody has ever honoured me like that before. I had no idea you thought so highly of me" amd continued like that for several minutes. I guarantee that fool has NEVER used that word again.

16. a comic named paul mooney (if I remember correctly) said that one of the comedy clubs in LA
would now be fining anyone who used the "n" word, and said that he, himself, had decided he wouldn't use it either.

18. No, because people on DU defend the wider use of the term 'bitch'.
Folks think it's not sexist. If not, what's the male term for 'bitch' that is exclusively male?

Funny, that. The quickest way to denigrate a males is to call him a word that equates him with a female.
