Bill would let families try to stop abortions

TOPEKA - The state Senate passed and sent to the governor a bill to strengthen abortion reporting requirements Thursday evening.

The bill includes a provision that would allow family members or a woman's husband to try to stop her from having a late-term abortion if they believe the law is being broken. It would also allow any county or district attorney to obtain a woman's medical records if there's probable cause to believe an abortion is performed illegally.

The bill expands the information physicians must provide the state when they perform late-term abortions. It also requires that more information be made public and that abortion clinic employees report suspected abuse of underage girls.

...

The bill passed 25-13, two votes short of the two-thirds majority required for a veto override.

2. Oh, but it's not about controlling women....snort
"The major point of contention was a provision that would allow siblings, parents, grandparents or the husband of a pregnant woman to go to court to stop her from having a late-term abortion if they can argue the procedure might violate state law."

I'd drop my "siblings, parents, grandparents or the husband" cold for trying something like that.

4. Ha Ha Me Too!
Jesus.

It is much better than the other bill they tried to run, still it is just awful.

Nah, not about control. It really says something when there is a discussion about a 4 year old wanting that brother or sister and that preventing a grown woman from controlling her own body. Jesus.

Hey Solly :hi:

8. The American Taliban strikes again...
....like Solly Mack said, I'd divorce/disown ANYone in my family that tried to control ME and my life to that extent. And I would DO as I darn well please with my body and my life - regardless. One way, or the other.

10. Oh for crying out loud!
Late term abortions are almost always about the health of the mother or because the baby's not going to make it or has already died. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to read something. Gak. If anyone fights that, what they're really saying is that the mother isn't worth crap.

13. A candidate I was working with started talking about this.
Edited on Sun Apr-20-08 03:42 PM by undeterred
He was a Democratic congressional candidate with progressive positions on other issues. But he told me he was pro-life. Then he told me he was not against Roe v. Wade. So I thought what the hell does that mean?

Eventually he told me he was concerned about "mens rights". First it was mens rights on custody placement. Well fine, but that has nothing to do with running for Congress. Then he told me he was for mens rights and abortion. I asked him to explain. Well, its like this: "When a man impregnates a woman, he is the father of that life and should have rights to any decisions that are made regarding it, including destroying its life." So once a woman is impregnated, her rights go out the window to the man who impregnated her- he gets to make the decision whether or not to continue the pregnancy. (Doesn't matter if he is married to her or if he met her at a bar last night. Its a metaphysical thing.)

I don't know how he gets to know whether or not she is pregnant or if the baby is his- I'm sure this will require a whole new set of rules regarding pregnancy testing and counseling.

I told the candidate this was inconsistent with the platform of the Democratic Party in my state and I abandoned my support for him.
