Young and Homeless

When I was little I always imagined what it would be like to run away from home. I guess in my own little imagination the adventure of running away would be like getting my house swept up in a tornado and getting whisked away to The Land of Oz. But unlike that fantasy realm, the aspect of running away holds a much harsher reality.

According to Yahoo! News, 13,800 people who are younger than 24-years-old have become part of New York City’s homeless population. Minority groups, such as African Americans, Latinos – gays and lesbians and bisexuals have unfortunately become part of New York’s homeless.

The articles states that because the homeless youth doesn’t stand out very well among the homeless population it is difficult for social workers to find them.

I would suggest to the guys and gals running for President of the United States to take into account the amount of homeless in America, especially the youth.

Poor folk have been ignored by the party for long enough, and the result is the weakening of the party.

Yet, it doesn't seem to matter. :(

4. Was homeless off and on from 19-24.

I refused to take demeaning jobs and was hampered in doing so (even when I was willing) by a psychological disability. This plus parents who weren't having any of it meant some time in and out of shelters.

I'm on SSI now and have had a stable living situation for a while, but that's always shaky. It's not out of the question that I'll be going back to the streets - and it will be a hell of a lot harder now that I'm older and in worse health. Of all the homeless, young males probably have it the easiest, although it's hard to describe any homelessness as "easy."
