Can i just say that the Poverty Forum folks seem to be the REAL Democrats on DU?

I don't mean to be divisive so much as compliment the vibe i get from the people who post here.


Thanks to you all, i have a bit more hope for DU.

1. I'm not poor any more so I don't continue to post much there

It feels like hypocrisy to me, even though I have more than ample experience with hopelessness and privation and lots of suggestions on how to endure it.

Inheriting enough to be middle class didn't turn me GOP. That party has done NOTHING for my current class, the "have a littles," except come up with ways to rob us and shift our wealth upward. In my case, they've allowed the insurance companies to continue calling sick people uninsurable, leaving me vulnerable to being wiped out very quickly should I develop something acute requiring lengthy and high tech treatment.

2. I hope there are more "not poor anymores" who post with as much respect as you have.

I count myself as one of the "not poor anymores" even though i have a poverty level income.

I have a good apartment that is only raising the rent this month after five years. I have a car to share.
I am not without options and things are looking up for me lately.


But i have seen that while there are people who just don't know and are rude,



There are still many more people who are good and decent and offer support without saying "you should"

4. I am not poor and have never been, though, at so many times when we lost our jobs

I felt that "there by the grace of god" even though I do not believe in god.

But to realize that in our richest country in the world so many people live in poverty because our "system" relies on the "free market," "on pulling by one's "boot strap" and all kind of empty slogans.

I have had discussions with Republicans, on a different board, who just would not accept the fact that some people just fall between the cracks. No, they should have had business insurance, or something. Yet, when these people lose everything, they are the first in line to demand help from the government.

And this, really, is what makes us liberals. That we think beyond our immediate circle about people who do need help, who do need assistance. Yes, even if some bad apples would "take advantage" of the system, so what? Our penal system is based on better letting the guilty go free than punish the innocent. Same holds for the poor, the sick and the disabled.

11. I don't believe there are any "bad apples"

If we treat access to the necessities of life as a basic human RIGHT rather than a privilege, I don't think it's possible for anyone to a "bad apple." In my view, which is apparently fairly shocking to a lot of "progressives," every human being is ENTITLED to the necessities of life regardless of any consideration - including employment. So, at worst, some people may be forced to use dishonest means in order to acquire what is rightfully theirs to begin with. While dishonesty is never ideal, I prefer to focus on the fact that if we didn't exclude anyone from access to the necessities of life to begin with, no such situations would exist.

5. I think that every person on DU is going to face this

eventually when the economy collapses. Some of us just will have more experience with struggling. In the end, Economic Justice is the biggest social issue facing the country and we will have to deal with it.

6. Too bad that that's what it will take, but so be it.

I've been ignored, slammed and called all sorts of things, trying to get "liberals" to actually be "LIBERAL".

Poverty is all I'm interested in, now, because the rest have dropped me, so I drop them.

Just like the millions of poor people in this country who USED to vote Democratic.
