"Do Not Disturb: Neighbors Oppose Plan to House Homeless in Empty Hotel"
"NIMBY alert! A plan to convert an empty, run-down hotel into a shelter for the homeless has some residents in Irvington, Indiana, an Indianapolis neighborhood, practicing their best "not in my backyard" arguments.

The location in question is the Indy East Motel, which was shut down two years ago after being plagued by crime. Its owners have offered to donate it to Good News Ministries, an organization that already runs one rescue mission. The resulting shelter could house 160 people. Tell the City Council to support the proposed shelter — and its homeless constituents."

3. Amazing, isn't it?
yesterday a new neighbor came to my door in tears because her 13 year old indoor only cat had run away on Saturday as they were moving items into their new home. The young woman was shaking and wiping away tears, so I dropped everything, took the tiny photo of her cat that she had and whipped up some large, bold 11x 17" posters for her to place around the neighborhood (thank goodness for photoshop, a large format printer, and a background in advertising). By the end of the day we had found her kitty, safe and sound. She wrote me a heartfelt note saying that she couldn't believe that anyone would drop everything to help a perfect stranger like that...which actually made me quite sad. I can remember strangers helping one another frequently in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio in the 70's when I was a kid, but this young woman had never experienced that America. Really, what are we becoming? It all stems from Reagan; don't we WANT to live in a Country where strangers care about one another simply because we're all here together on this planet?

There's a three story apartment complex right behind my home. If they announced that it was going to be housing for the homeless I would have no problem with that whatsoever. After all; won't people behave as decent citizens if we treat them that way??

2. And when the poor rise up..
.. and the violence begins...

We'll see tons of hand wringing and the same people crying "How could this happen in America?"
