Here's an idea for SSI
OK, I am on SSI and even with what I get, it is far too hard for me to find housing.

A simple solution would be to simply...

Increase the monthly payment by $300, in exchange for not being eligible for Section 8 housing. It would cut bureaucracy, since people on SSI could find housing on the open market and wouldn't have to depend on Section 8, and the program could be cut back somewhat to reflect that (though I would keep Section 8 for the working poor, and not cut it back so much that some members of the working poor can't get housing more immediately).

If this is done, people can more easily find stability, and thus, increasing chances of vocational rehabilitation and getting OFF SSI.

2. Not sure where you are or
how much you get but an extra $300 wouldn't get you are box here. Average rent is $1100. month for a 1 bedroom, deposit, first and last months rent up front and this is a rural area. If you can do farm work and don't mind living in an old, old firetrap you might find something for around $500. month. I do know of a place that will rent you a room for $135.00 a week, no food prep area though so you would have to eat out.

3. I have been trying to get a housing voucher for ages. What they could
do is increase the number of vouchers for privately owned houses and apartments. Our town has competition between seniors and young families for these vouchers and there is a 2+ year waiting list. I finally joined with my grandson (a student) and rented an apartment without a voucher.
