I tell ya - the "P" word is hard to find ANYWHERE! Obscure OR famous! (Out of sight...out of mind, you know?) To my mind, Tavis Smiley on PBS is one of the few who talks about this very real reality!
Cornel West is another one who isn't afraid to A) acknowledge this issue and B) talk about it.
I recently saw a re-airing of the 2007 documentary entitled: "Skid Row" on the Indie Channel just a few nights ago:
http://www.indiepixfilms.com/film/skidrowI checked and I don't see where it is slotted to play again...just yet. But if you get the Indie Channel - may want to keep a lookout for the future. This was BACK in 2007....I can only imagine that conditions have worsen since then. Not a real popular topic, to say the very least as it goes directly against the grain that "all is well" and peachy in the country when it comes to poverty and homelessness and just how many folks in this country go hungry every, single day....
There was also another documentary I saw regarding this. I can't remember the name of it - but it took place in Florida - just a few miles from the tourist attractions of Disney in Orlando and how many families NOW are living in cramped motel rooms because of being laid off and are just trying to make ends meet - in fact, many school buses now stop at these motels to pick up children and the conditions are nothing short of horrid and dangerous. Like I said, I can't remember where I saw that....Current TV maybe?
You bring up a very real (sadly growing) problem in this country which (seems to me) is largely ignored or swept under the rug. It's not a pretty sight. Nope. Not a pretty sight at all. In fact, the Skid Row piece had the 'audacity' to make the juxtaposition of how many multi-million dollar mansions in LA/Hollywood foreshadow these folks on Skid Row.....and the numbers KEEP growing.
Kudos to the folks out there trying to make a difference in the limited-space shelters. We need a whole bunch more of shelters, IMO!!!!! Shelter from the wind and the rain and the hunger without judgement!!!!!!!
