I'm leaving my comfy native habitat for five days
And heading to Texas for my fiance's graduation, which will be fun. But it's always somewhat of a challenge to eat out down there. Don't get me wrong, I love it there, especially around Austin, but I've never dreamed there could be so many deep-fried vegetables - like CORN! :D

Then there was the time I ordered a green salad and got one - covered with eggs and grated cheese ... well, there were a few pieces of iceberg lettuce and a slice of tomato underneath it all (somewhere).

My SO found a good restaurant for his graduation party - they have pasta primavera on the menu, at least.

I guess I take living in veg-friendly Seattle for granted at times. :D

2. Where in Texas will you be?
Houston has a number of very good veg and veg-friendly restaurants, if you'll be near there...or I may be able to find some recommendations for you elsewhere.

3. I'll be in San Marcos
But I'd love to get your Houston veg recommendations, as my future in-laws live there. Thanks. :)

9. Here is a list of veg restaurants in Houston
http://www.vegetarian-restaurants.net/usa/TexHouston.htm

Be aware that it isn't up to date - although it does list some new restaurants, a few of the listings are no longer in business, so call before you go to any of these.

5. We were just having a sub thread on the subject of
Southern food in the lounge. I think that I was limited to black eyed peas and collard greens. :)

You might want to pack some nummies to take with you. Some back-up rations, as it were. :hi:

6. You should see my carry-on bag
Lots of fruit, nuts and some raw food bars to boot. :D

Continental doesn't help matters by not offering a special meal on the Seattle-Houston route, incidentally. x(

10. Most southern cooks put ham or something
in those or any other vegetables they cook. Unless the restaurant is vegetarian, those dishes probably aren't.

11. That was part of our discussion.
Apparently, ham drippings go on or in everything. I don't understand why anyone eating that way wouldn't be worried about heart disease, but I'm coming from a biased perspective. ;)

7. Here is a site with a list of restaurants in San Marcos.
Edited on Thu May-11-06 12:03 PM by BrklynLiberal
I did not find a listing for vegetarian, per se, but there is a description of each restaurant and that might give you some insight into what would be available for you.

http://san-marcos.california.city-guides.com/restaurants.html?

Nevermind, it closed in Sept of 2005
I found this quote on another site. Not sure if this implies that Suzie's is no longer there, but may be worth a try.

A coming addition to the San Marcos area, Concho Commons will be a three-story office and shopping complex where Colloquium Books and Suzie's Vegetarian Restaurant now stand on North LBJ Drive.

Several Vegetarian Restaurants in Austin. How far is that from San Marcos?

8. I've found that when traveling
it pays to pack a decent amount of food with you. I usually take a half-dozen organic food bars, some just-add-hot-water soup, some chips, and any shelf-stable microwave foods are good (such as Fantastic 3-bean Chili, or some health-food brands of indian food). Fruit can be found everywhere, although you might not find organic, and you can also make some decent salads by getting some greens with vinaigrette and adding some baked tofu (which you can find at most grocery stores, even the conventional kind).

Good luck. :)
