My father's good friends (and fellow liberals) lost their two beloved dogs when a neighbor of theirs senselessly shot them both. Here is their story:
Dear Fellow Animal Lovers,
On April 2, 2006, Beauregard, a beagle-basset mix and a Hurricane Katrina survivor, along with his playmate Millie, another rescued beagle, were murdered by Kenneth R. Cox III (Case Numbers: CRB0600548A & CRB0600548B), while scenting a deer on an adjacent farm near Circleville, OH. Mr. Cox shot the two dogs with a 9mm handgun. After originally confessing to the shootings, he pleaded "not guilty" to animal cruelty at his arraignment, claiming one of the dogs "growled" at him. He stated he "shot the dog that growled at him, then shot the second dog that was just standing near the first dog." Both dogs were across a woven wire fence and were shot directly through their sides.
Mr. Cox was not present at the Pre-Trial yesterday, however, both WBNS-Channel 10 and WSYX-Channel 6 covered the story during their 5 and 6 pm newscasts. Both sides are still in the Discovery phase of the trial process and were not prepared to settle yesterday. An additional Pre-Trial will be set for a later date. As soon as we have that date, we'll let you know. In the meantime, we are continuing our fight for justice by collecting signatures at The Petition Site. As of this date, we have received over 1,700 signatures of support from around the world!
Tony and I want to thank all of you for your expressions of sympathy and concern. Just when you most feel a loss of faith in humanity due to one individual's actions, it is a great restorer of faith when so many more are sympathetic to our attachment to life's loving creatures. Beauregard and Millie are now buried in our back yard where they played, with a dogwood tree planted over them. We miss Beauregard snuggled between us at night where he felt safe, and Millie who made him play and become so very happy! Beauregard was a true symbol of the willingness to overcome adversity - from such a sad, shy, skinny little fellow in St. Bernard Parish - but with still with a willing spirit to learn to trust human love, (I think for the first time), to find true doggie happiness with a beagle playmate, and to experience the thrill of freedom to follow his nose for a good deer chase... to the very last unexpected final moment of his life. If any of you have seen the movie 'Secondhand Lions' you will understand when I say that Beauregard "died with his boots on". Millie was just happy to be with and follow him along - for better or for worse.
Perhaps this is my opportunity to extend a favorite quote: "We patronize animals for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extensions of senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time..." Henry Beston
