AIR CAMPAIGN CONTINUES TO SAVE BABY SEALS!


OMAHA (June 29, 2006)– As REO Speedwagon takes the stage in Memorial Park Friday, pilot Dave McCandless will take to the skies again with an aerial banner to save hundreds of thousands of baby seals in Canada.

Continuing the momentum started last week by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), ShirtsForSeals.com in partnership with West coast friends Sonoma People for Animal Rights and Omaha citizens, are sponsoring the locally famous banner. The message for Omaha is a simple one – stop eating Canadian Crab.

“Canada’s commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on earth and is basic Draconian cruelty,” said Marie Schwartz, Shirtsforseals.com founder. Sealing is carried out by fisherman in the off-season. After decades of negotiations, The HSUS has reluctantly called for a world-wide boycott of Canadian seafood. Sealers earn only $16M from this cruel industry but earn nearly $3B in seafood exports. Canada has lost nearly $165M in seafood exports, with Canadian snow crab representing $158M.

Omaha chefs and restaurants are doing their share, even more than Denver and Kansas City. “We are extremely proud to be a part of this important campaign and included with the extremely high-end restaurants and chefs jumping on board in Omaha.” said Monique Huston, manager at the Dundee Dell. The Dell was the first restaurant in Omaha to speak out for the seals. The Dundee Dell is very active in the charitable community; Huston was the 2006 Nebraska Chair of Taste of the Nation, a national campaign devoted to ending childhood hunger.

“The Canadian seal hunt is a tragedy that needs to be brought to the attention of the public,” said Chef Lance Wang, of Omaha’s new, trendy O Casual Dining.
