OMAHA, Neb. -- A man who pleaded guilty to beating a 4-month-old German shepherd puppy to death was sentenced on Friday, and the prosecutor said afterward that the case sometimes kept him up at night.

Anthony Schepis was sentenced to one to two years in prison, which means he won't serve more than a year and could be paroled in six months. He is the second person convicted under a relatively new Nebraska law that makes animal abuse a felony.

Animal advocates packed the courtroom, and said they wanted to make a show to Judge Marlon Polk that this was an important case. Polk said he had several letters asking him to take the crime seriously, but he said that under Nebraska law he can only consider letters from victims.

2. My wife took the day off and was there

I'll have her comments tomorrow. A lady in Sarpy county (just South of us) killed a dog with a butcher knife and got off not long ago.

3. Not to go off-topic, but...
to kill a dog with a butcher's knife is a fairly brutal crime. Got off...? How?

7. I remember a case here....
a few years back in which a man beat a stray puppy he found to death. He got out of doing jail time by pleading a heart condition. :puke:

4. Aye
Polk said he had several letters asking him to take the crime seriously, but he said that under Nebraska law he can only consider letters from victims.

1. How is a dog supposed to write a letter?
2. How is a murder victim supposed to write a letter?

Stupid law. :grr:

5. I'm glad it's a felony there
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 12:39 PM by flamingyouth
The woman who poisoned neighbor cats here got 30 DAYS recently because the court recognized that she was mentally unstable. (Well, no shit.) And of course they didn't charge her with a felony. :grr:
