Anybody else Not Eat Wheat?
My diet is going good. No meat or chicken at all. I loved the "if it walks I don't eat it" motto. Makes things easy. I have been eating eggs. No dairy. And am trying no wheat for a while to see if I feel better without it.

I've been trying to eat every color every day = red,yellow, blue and green. And jeat rice and beans to keep me from getting hungry.

This really isn't very hard.

1. Once I went for a month on a gluten free diet.
(Long story.) I started craving regular bread, etc. I don't want to do gluten free again.

I'm having a hard time just getting some tasty "replacement" foods,like Veggie Patch meatballs, in my store.

2. I have a friend who is allergic to wheat
She goes without it for periods of time (which is hard because it's in so many things) but then breaks down and has it every now and then as she adores baked goods. She's always loved breads, brownies, donuts and the like. When she found out about the allergy she was so unhappy.

3. If she can get the Foods by George products
or the Nasmaste baking mixes, she should try them out. They're awesome and gluten-free. There's actually pretty decent gluten-free versions of all of those things, except bread oddly (at least pre-made). I used to be a buyer for this stuff and I put together our "educational" materials on wheat-free & gluten-free diets, so I know a lot of the products that are out there.

4. I sometimes buy her wheat-free cookies when I'm at the natural food store
I should try getting some other stuff to see if she likes it. Her other problem is that she's allergic to soy, which is in even more things than wheat.

5. Look for the Enjoy Life brand.
They make cookies, cereal bars, granolas, chocolate chips. All of their products are free of gluten, dairy, nuts, soy, eggs. And they actually taste good! Well, I've had their chocolate chip & snickerdoodle cookies and I really like those. I would imagine their cereal bars and granola is also good. They were huge sellers.

6. I'll look for them
It appears they're available at the natural store near my place and the Whole Paycheck Foods near my weekday job. It would be worth a stop by both places to see what's available.

7. EnjoyLife products also go on sale fairly regularly.
I'd get a deal on at least part of the line almost every month. It's basically up to the store whether they're going to pass the distributor deal along to you though.

8. I tried rice bread and it tasted like cardboard.
So for right now I am just not eating bread period.

But I am fixing basmati rice to eat instead (with beans) and that seems to keep my cravings under control - so far at least.

9. I went through all of that last year because I suspected that I do not
digest wheat products well anymore. I tried rice bread, pasta made from corn meal (not too bad, but the consistency is not "pasta".....

I also tried a gluten free diet, but discovered that gluten isn't the probelm with me, the wheat is.

So now I enjoy breads, pastas, and pizza crusts all made from spelt flour, sometimes rye, and these are delicious and very similar to wheat in texture and taste. Not gluten free, but I seem to digest it better and feel much better when I eat this grain.

See if you can find this in your area, I get mine at health food stores.

Spelt flour, available in most natural food markets and gourmet shops, has been staging a comeback as a substitute for soft- and hard-wheat flours for those who are gluten-sensitive. Spelt is not entirely gluten-free, however, so it will not be a satisfactory substitute for everyone who is gluten intolerant.

Spelt has been cultivated for more than 5,000 years. It is a distant relative of wheat but it wasn't until sometime in the 1980s that it was introduced to the North American market. Spelt kernels, either cracked or whole, can be cooked like rice, but it is the flour that has become a popular wheat substitute in all kinds of recipes, including those for bread, cookies, crackers, muffins, pastries, pasta and pancakes to name a few.

10. I can get spelt bread out at Wild Oats Natural Food Store
I saw it last time I was there and wondered about it. And it is made locally so that is a good thing.

I can eat oats OK so I think mine is the wheat and not the gluten, too. I had oatmeal this morning and feel all right.

I was surprsied by the what thing - as soon as I quit eating wheat my brain fog just cleared up. And my energy level is a lot higher. But that might be because I am just not eating anything junky right now - all fruits and vegetables and rice and beans.

Yesterday was hard for some reason. I just kept feeling hungry but I think I just didn't eat enough for breakfast. So this morning I had two scrambled eggs and oatmeal and fruit and that feels a lot more substantial.
