This, folks, is absolutely amazing,
We won a phase out of gestation crates in FL in 2002 with 55%.
The corporate farming lobby claimed they hadn't taken it seriously enough and swore that next time would be different.
'Next time' was the 2006 election cycle. This time the ballot initiative will phase out gestation crates AND veal crates.
We collected 220,000 signatures (needed 120,000). Early polls were promising, last spring we had 71% support. But that was early. We had a summer and fall of a very well funded adversary in front of us. This summer saw millions spent on the worst political advertising campaign ever seen. (go to the Opposition website at prop204(.)com to see what I mean. the first ads simply read "Prop 204 is Hogwash" which had the effect of just peaking Arizonans curiousity and a massive uptick of Googling "Prop 204" which directed them to the pro 204 website.
We didn't spend hardly a dime in advertising by the September polls and support was STILL 4:1.... 65 yes 16 no 19 undecided. Then, at a fundraising event, HSUS announced that there'd be one million dollars spent on t.v. ads during the last four weeks before the election. During that first week of ads, there was another poll that showed support had increased to 72% with still only 16% opposed. This week: one of the largest movie theater chains in the state publicly endorsed the campaign and is donated pre-show screen space for prop 204 ads, East Valley Tribune (third largest paper in the state) endorsed Prop 204. and today..... by far the largest paper in the state, the ARIZONA REPUBLIC endorsed Prop 204. This fricking rocks.
