Japanese Antarctic whaling fleet is within days of embarking again

Cross posted in GDP.

To all opposed to whaling:

The Japanese Antarctic whaling fleet is within days of embarking again to rape the Southern Ocean, under the pretext of "scientific research".

In spite of the glut of whale meat in cold storage, Japan inexplicably doubled the Minke whale quota from 440 per year to almost 900 two years ago, and added 50 fin whales and 50 humpback whales to the roster.

In spite of the fact that whale meat is overloaded with mercury (over 20X the legal limit set by the Japanese government itself), PCB and dioxin (the most potent carcinogen known to science), the whale meat industry is labeling whale meat as "health food", and the Japanese government is feeding whale meat to elementary school children in their lunch program, in its effort to rejuvenate the whaling and whale meat industries.

Same time last year (November 2005), Anthony Marr, with Canadian activist Bruce Foerster, conducted an anti-whaling mission at Shimonoseki, Japan, where the Japanese Antarctic whaling fleet was assembled. Among other things, Anthony took dozens of pictures of the fleet as well as the whale meat market. Moments after he photographed the factory ship at its restricted dock, the one with "RESEARCH" painted on its hull (one of the most blatant lies in recent history), he was interrogated by two plain-clothe agents for close to two hours. The fleet departed on November 8 and was subsequently intercepted by the Farley Mowat of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society on the high seas.

In both 2004 and 2005, Anthony Marr also went to Taiji, Japan, where thousands of dolphins are slaughtered every year for meat and hundreds are captured for entertainment, and where the infamous "Whale Museum", more appropriately, the Whaling Museum, in which whale and dolphin meat are sold, is located.

To see the pictures of the whaling fleet at Shimonoseki close-up, and the inside of the Whale Museum at Taiji, and the whale meat for sale throughout Japan, and the restaurant menus featuring whale cuisine, click on the following link:

Anthony Marr calls for the following action:

1. Write to the Japanese consulate or embassy in your city, expressing your disapproval of Japanese whaling, and that you will not visit Japan nor purchase Japanese products until the whaling is terminated. (You can find basic information aboutJapanese whaling in the above link.)

2. Write to the Japanese car dealers and electronic outlets in your city to say that, with all due respect to the quality of their products, you will not be purchasing anything Japanese for as long as Japanese whaling persists.

This strategy is to pit a vast array of major Japanese manufacturers and industries against the relatively small whaling and whale meat industries. If we all do it, and spread the message far and wide, there should be no contest.

For the whales.
