An Inconvenient Truth

We watched the DVD this weekend. I have three veggie comments:

1) I'm a disappointed that there wasn't even the barest mention of a plant based diet. Not even a suggestion to eat 2 meat free meals a week. (Did I miss it?) Honestly, I think you could get people to cut back on driving more easily than cut back on meat.

2) I really liked when Gore used the frog analogy at the end he said, "And the frog? Well the frog stays there until you rescue him. You have to rescue the frog!"

3) Even if there were live footage available (& I don't know if there is) I'm glad the polar bear scene was animated. :cry:

I thought it was a great movie. I thought he made alarming points in a non-alarming manner. I hope it helps to wake people up to how serious this issue is.

1. I watched this last night.

I agree completely. Additionally, eating less meat (or none altogether) is a low hanging fruit. Almost anyone could do this immediately. LeftyMom and I were talking last night about this, and something she said rang very true. Neither she (nor I, nor a great many folks) could afford to go, right now, and buy a hybrid. Nor would that be the wisest choice to make today. However, adopting a more plant-based diet is something that could be implemented immediately or slowly over time.

That aside, I was amazed at some of the information on that DVD. It should be a teacher's aide in classrooms around the world.

2. The one fact that surprised me most was

after the 1990 Clean Air Act was passed, scientists saw a decrease in pollution in the ice the following year. :wow:

So much for the right wing argument that human activity can not be a cause of global warming.

3. You know,

we probably should try to maintain the impression that we talk about other things, rather than the same geeky stuff we talk about on DU. I mean, here we are, two attractive and reasonably young people, and we spend our spare time talking about the relationship between diet and climate change. Oh, and energy policy in Cuba and how it relates to international trade. With a brief discussion of the tanking Zune and it's effect on Microsoft's earnings. If that gets out, we're going to lose our status as cool kids around here.

So either we have to start lying and saying we discussed something less wonkish (and nobody who knows us will believe it,) or maybe we should imply that we had this conversation nekkid. ;)

9. Your first point is so very pertinent

One of my favorite old t-shirts has the saying "vegetarianism is serious environmental action".

Al Gore is one of the few individuals who can have major impact on popular opinion without addressing the very basic issue of food production and animal agriculture. I do applaud his efforts and attended the theatre release on the first weekend it was available here in Seattle.

However, I generally must question the seriousness of individuals who do not address the very basic issue of the direct connection between animal ag. and energy usage, resource mutilation, climate degradation and the economic impact of sick people.

People who claim to believe in democracy, yet who insist on dining like kings & queens, are walking talking bundles of contradictions.

It is amazing how the correlation between clean, healthy bodies and a clean, healthy environment somehow is missed by so many who claim to be concerned about conservation.
