I just wig out when I see RW talking points, as I've spent too many years in the animal rights trenches researching and following the money to lies against animal protection legislation.

No wonder so many are left in those trenches who won't vote for a Democrat. "Hate" shouldn't be in the Progressive language, even against Bush.

Okay  Thanks for listening.

1. One at a time.
That's the only way to change minds about anything.

2. We can't, I guess we have to be well-behaved vegetarians or they will hate us.
Mustn't mention ethical quandries.

Ever.

Last time I make that mistake.

3. Sorry it didn't go well.
One of the real problems I find with even having these discussions is that asking people to think about their choices is interpreted as "OMG they want to take away our meeeaaat!!11!"

Almost invariably, we lose any hope of really discussing working through our own sense of responsibility for our choices, and a "peta assholes" melee begins. By even mentioning the subject, we can be dismissed as militant vegans, nanny-staters, and KOOKS (heh) and we lose the position of the moderate veg*n--you know, the kind that people "don't mind."

I voted :) I just dropped off some "educational" material for a couple of polite posters. Google is my friend.

7. Jeez, these anti-peta nuts get themselves into a frothing frenzy
There hadn't been many PETA flame threads lately, mostly due to absence of certain obsessed instigator.

9. Look behind the curtain...
Like so many folks that voted for Bush, you have to look at 2 things:
1. Where loyalties lie;
2. What information they've gotten/where the information has come from (as you stated).

I think that once you take one or both of those into consideration, you begin to understand why folks hate PETA (and not just dislike one or two things they do).

Personally, I don't see PETA changing. These folks that one might want to convince need a change in mindset. Nothing more, nothing less.

11. Well stated as always flvegan :)
I've seen PETA change to more mainstream since the 80's, it's the rabid research, hunting, fur, farm factory and breeding industries that feed their supporters misinformation. Those who choose to believe it, aren't very responsible in understanding animal welfare over profit, imho.

A lot confuse PETA with the more fringey orgs too (ALF, SHAC). A red flag for me in the DU PETA wars, is when I see 15-20 year old talking points from anti-Peta sites.

I think Ingrid Newkirk is to the animal protection movement as Cindy Sheehan is to the anti-war movement. Both are attacked by corporate based think tanks, which means they must be damn effective :D And the media loves them !

DUers are responsible to know the difference!

12. The next Truth or Dare thread in The Lounge...
I am SO going to make someone post (in GD, natch) that Ingrid Newkirk is to animal protection as Cindy Sheehan is to peace. Ooooh...that'll be a good one.

Kidding aside, what I really dislike is when folks take the actions of a couple activists and say that they are the actions of PETA, the organization.

I also want to add that "PETA" is a household word that causes discussion, both positive and negative. Pretty big accomplishment for a relatively young animal rights organization.

13. In certain circumstances I'm convinced attackers are lashing out
at his or her feelings of guilt or remorse. You know, the sort that start babbling apologetically when someone merely states he or she is veggie or vegan.
