We can't tell you where the new storefront will be, my pasty vegan ass. There won't be one. There's no demand for their product. The day I was there protesting, they had maybe 4 people an hour go in, and none of them bought anything. They can't be making money with five security goons out front and no customers. Nobody wants to be their landlord, their neighbor, their lender. Schumacher Furs is as dead as their merchandise.

2. I'm so glad to see this!
The wearing of another animal's skin is so repulsive. I was reminded of this when I went to the local symphony concert last night. I'm not a real fan of these events, largely because they just REEK of class and cultural elitism. But two parishioners play in the orchestra and gave me tickets--which pretty much means I'm expected to be there. Well, along with the not-particularly-interesting music (and not even well performed last night), there were SCADS of old white women wearing the skins of dead animals. I still can't believe people think this is appropriate!! I was sick!

The day is coming when people will see these for what they are. And the old white women will be embarassed to be seen in them.

And every closing of a furrier is a battle won. Congrats, Portland!

4. When you say the concerts "REEK of class and cultural elitism"
do you mean your local symphony in particular? Or symphonic performances in general?

I regularly attend my local symphony, and I don't think it reeks of class and cultural elitism.

7. I mean the local one
This town is the most class and race divided place I've lived since I left Boston. Take that back, it's worse than Boston. But I was told recently, by a member of the orchestra (first chair flute), why no blacks or Latinos go to their concerts--"We don't have any Blacks or Spanish people". We were sitting in a restaurant and the young man busing the next table was pretty obviously Latino. BUt then, that's the job of the servant class--to be invisible!

3. Schumacher wants protesters charged under the AETA.

Because when I think terrorism, I think scruffy punk kids and sweet little old ladies and everybody in between, standing around with signs, handing out fliers and showing informational video on a television perched atop some milk crates and a radio flyer wagon.

Oh, and me, since I did the sign and chant thing up there back in October. Fuck yeah, I'm scary. :eyes:

5. Unfortunately, police departments
and our own government tend to agree with them. Anyone the rich people don't like is a terrorist. Anyone who protests anything is a terrorist.

6. Generally.
Schumacher has really shitty relations with the Portland PD though. Even for $50/hr (which is what the cops make to watch the protest, since it's weekend OT) they really don't like having to watch the store (a job that consists of sitting in a sqaud car across the street for a few hours,) and it chaps them that he doesn't pay for it because he made a huge stink about the protesters, when any other business would pay a lot of money for a cop of their very own.
