Would you consider a dirty matted 7 lb dog with no collar abused?
Edited on Thu Dec-21-06 06:59 PM by Dirty Hippie
A little Yorkie mix has been roaming my neighborhood for months.

A neighbor picked her up and found out where she lived.

When she returned her the neighbor suggested that the owner put a collar on her so she could be identified.

The owner replied that whatever happened to her was "just fate."

When she told me the story I vowed to liberate the dog if I had a chance.

Sunday night she wandered in front of my house.

I figure I live at least a mile from where she lives.

She was dirty and matted and of course, no collar.

So I brought her in and cleaned her up as best I could.

Next day, I called a friend of mine that does doggie rescue and she took her in.

(I donated enough money to cover her vet bills and upkeep).

She was seen by a vet and is generally in good health.

Now I see signs in my neighborhood asking for her return.

Did I do the right thing?

I've never "liberated" a dog before but she is so little I cannot imagine how someone would let her roam.

Here is her picture after she was professionally groomed...

2. She's adorable. And she's fortunate to live in your neighborhood.
You did the right thing.

Before DU, I would have said, Yes, the dog was abused. But DU has made me a better person in that DU has made me consider perspectives I would NEVER have considered before, like poverty, domestic abuse & sadly, my original snap judgment, indifference to the suffering of others. Either way, whoever let this little creature go, either didn't care enough for her or couldn't care for her. But you changed her future.

Dirty Hippie, if you're ever in the Denver area, let me know. I would love to meet you & treat you to a vegan meal!!

3. She's beautiful! And you did the right thing
A good guardian doesn't let a dog wander around without ID. My greatest fear is that the vegan beagle would get lost and separated from me. So, I am obsessive about her wearing a collar with ID, having a fence yard, never walking off leash, etc. These things are basic to dog care. To be careless about these is at least neglect, and for a dog this small, I'd call it abuse.

So, you did the right thing! Thank you!

4. Fate happens.
The neighbor got her wish, and so did that little dog. So many things can happen to an animal that's been put in such a situation.

You did the right thing, and you did it well. Welcome to the show.

She could have gotten hit by a car, attacked by an animal, stolen by someone and given to a lab to be experimented on. To let a dog wander alone through a neighborhood is abuse. I am glad you helped her!

6. Follow-up
Thanks for all of the encouraging words.

I definitely think "fate" was a big part of this situation.

I was talking to my doggie rescuer friend about the little girl and low and behold my sister beeped in.

She was discussing her travel to my town for Christmas and she said she wanted for me to help her adopt a dog while she was here.

I nearly fell out of my chair.

So cutie-pie will be living in a new city with my sister, her husband and their two daughters.

For now, she will be their only pet so she should get plenty of attention!

Thanks again.
